A friend of mine who is not online yet [1]wants to be. They are on a
very limited budget and so are looking for the cheapest way of achieving
this. They can't go down the cable route, so it has to be dial-up.

Access will be for e-mail, a bit of general browsing and, I think the
driving factor, so her son can visit CBBC sites.

    Any recomendations?

[1] so obviously this is not a 'my friend...' post

  2. TescoNet £12.49 per month 24hr Free dialup is about the best IMO and
possibly the cheapest ...needs a BT phoneline though

Without a doubt, PlusNet. They do unmetered packages from £5/month, or
    broadband from £18.99. <www.plus.net>

I emailed them with a shed load of quastions before I signed up, and can
only say that their support is impressive.

    Just a happy customer.

    Same deal.

I would be happier if I could persuade BT to fix the cable fault and I
    could get broadband.

I've just ahd a look, and it might fit the bill, provided that the
cheaper packages actually allow you to connect at sensible times of day.

If it works. Then again a lot of ISPs share the same backbone systems,
so it's quite common to see identical packages being offered.
Should be. I just hope it lasts. I originally signed up with UK Online
many moons ago, and they were rated very well at the time. However,
their service has gone very much downhill over the last few months or
    so.
Yes, that would help. It was BT that were all the delay in getting my
system hooked up here. They have also sent us no less than three bills
in four weeks since we moved here.

I wish I could have stuck with NTL!

I believe they do, they work on a contention policy, and limit the
number of hours can can use it per week. I just checked, and it is an
'Anytime' system, but they limit usage - the bottom package is 5
hours/week and 30 minutes per session.

I concur. A happy PlusNet customer for over four years now.

Yes, I wasn't disputing that, I was just saying that a lot of ISPs use
the same backbone anyway, so often offer similar packages.
