Janet has a full bike license. Since moving to Wales she has passed her car
test and sold her bikes. She hasn't driven a bike in 12 years. I see that
quads are now on sale - eBay. We saw them on the road in France this summer.

Just how easy/hard is it to register one of these things; and then just how
hard/easy is it to insure it? The last bike I registered was a KDX200 in
1986 - I suppose things have changed a bit since then.

I have a vision of Janet getting back to a bit of open air transport during
the pleasant weather. Am I being silly?

Thanks to a change in the law last year, quads are now classified as
vehicles, so you can buy certain varieties already road legal. A google
for 'road legal quads uk' should turn up plenty of suppliers.

Insurance: contact http://www.nfumutual.co.uk/ - they have agents in most
    rural areas.

If you can claim some sort of "farmer" status then you should be able to
    insure a quad quite cheaply.

When I lived in the Wye Valley my house had 5 acres which was registered as
a smallholding. As a bona fide smallholder[1], insuring SO Land Rovers, SO
    tractors etc was very cheap.

One the way back from Frankfurt we were overtaken by a rather mad
Frenchman on a quad. Sounded like a mad bee and looked ever so slightly
    scary in the corners.

  7. In Spain this summer, I saw a butch-looking Yamaha road-legal quad
powered by a 660 Tenere engine, of all things. Bet that was fun.

Didn't they used to do one with the TZR250 lump - TRi-Z or something, IIRC

That would have been more 'fun' I should think, if so...

    Quite.

I recall going to a supermoto meeting ages ago and someone had put a
tuned RG500 lump in one. It never seemed to be pointing in the
    direction it was travelling.

mups emerged from their own little world to say
Quads seem to be popular in parts France. Perhaps they have not got the
same restrictive laws [1] about where you can ride them as the UK.

We stopped at a bike dealer in Carteret (on the coast SW of Cherbourg).
They had as many quads, of differing sizes and shapes, on the forecourt as
    bikes.

The large beaches and dunes nearby probably have something to do with it.

    [1] or just ignore them

As I said elsewhere in this thread, we don't have those laws either
anymore, thanks to an EU law that takes precedent. You can ride a quad
anywhere you can drive a car, & you should be able to get insurance
from any of the usual sources.

In fact if that fuckwit Alun Michael gets his way & greenlaning is
banned, the road is the only place you *will* be able to ride quads.

This is what I was referring to. I can't imagine many people wanting to use
quads to make road trips. I'd love to have one for larking about in sand
dunes etc. but some self righteous **** like Janet Street Porter would soon
    put a stop to it.

I've seen one a few times around here. I has a number plate so I assume
    it's all above board.

Not exactly a powervalve engine. It's based on the bottom end of a PV
but has no PVs and is tuned to the bollocks. They fucking rock
    apparently.

We've found a sort of gokart frame, which was previously powered by
pedals. This is going to be modified, heavily, and will feature a proper
engine of some sort. Laura is quite welcome to terrorise the
    neighbourhood when it is done.

Having said that, I'm not sure it's a good idea to let her and Joe meet.
They'll either decide to work together and take over the world, or come
up with new and amusing ideas for killing each other. Although, that
    could be amusing.

Sorry I missed you earlier, had to press on. Anyway, it's been delivered
    safe and sound.
