What? You should mark her down for not using stop cock or flange, at
    least.

She's a girlie, though, so you can't expect her to know any technical
    terms.

Man quoting for new boiler yesterday also recommended magnet. I also
smiled. Then he explained it was a magnet filter that took out swarf
and other steel minibits from the system. Hmm, thought I, that
    actually makes sense.

My mate recommends them. They take out an awful lot of gunge from the
system. He always fits them to new boilers.
The power flushing out of system beforehand is not too good in my
opinion, I did it with my system, but there was still gunge at the
bottom of the rads when they were took off. Possible that it would stay
there and not go round the pipes, but maybe not worth risking with a
new, expensive boiler. The chemical treatments are the best IMO, pour
the cleaner in, let it circulate for 2-4 weeks, then flush out.
Fit a filter afterwards, along with inhibitor, and all should be well.
I didnt bother with a filter when I changed mine last year,it was an
inexpensive boiler, flushed and chemically cleaned beforehand, inhibitor
added. So long as it lasts 10 years, then I'll just fit a new one, and
    be happy.

No, you can do it without, but not advised as a first project for the
    faint hearted
    £400 sounds excessive to me

It sounds like the original power flush wasn't done properly

Much cheaper would be to introduce a sludge busting chemical, and make
sure you keep enough scale inhibitor in the system

I do have a descaling pump which you are welcome to borrow if you want
and can get the UKRM underground to pick up from Watford
