Discussion in 'UK Motorcycles' started by Brownz (via Gurgle Gruppez), Feb 24, 2011.

  1. Got a conference there at the end of June, so have tagged on a few
extra days holibobs at the end as I've never visited before.

Anyone have any tips on what to do & where to stay ?

Lovely place, I sailed into/out of it. Did some sight seeing of the
    antiquities and drank a lot.

I've stayed in the Ibis in the city centre twice when there for
football and a conference at the Corinthia Hotel.

The Ibis (Liberdade) is as every other Ibis but walking distance into
    the centre.

The Corinthia is a far nicer hotel but a lot further out.

sit in the sun and drink beer.

The castle thingy on top of the hill is worth a visit. I took a walk
around the old/new(ish) port and it was a bloody good stroll.

Lisboa has a fascinating faded glory about the whole place. I could
walk forever around the nooks and crannies, every turn something new,
    something interesting.

The Port Institute, top of the one of a funicular railway, is
compulsory. Just work your way through a selection from white up.

I too sailed into and out of it but with the Grey Funnel line.
Saw no antiquities but did some drinking in the Spunk Bar.
It doesn't seem to exist anymore according to Google.
Sad really , as everything was reasonably priced IIRC.

  9. Thanks everyone... Liking the sound of the Port crawl.

Somehow, I think if I was to see somewhere called the "Spunk Bar" I
may well have to give it a wide berth....

  10. Go to the Maritime Museum. It's absolutely brilliant, People forget that
Portugal was a major seafaring and exploring nation, and it's all there,
    including some fabulous ship models.

There's a sort of annex with some ShiteOld Aeroplanes as well. And the
Carriage Museum is next door. The 17th and 18th century equivalents of a
Mercedes S Class in Jewish Racing Gold with added chrome bits.

But the Maritime Museum is an absolute must-see.

Last time I was there some fucker let a bomb off. Things might have
improved in the last 36 years, however.

    This:

    http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Santa_Justa_Lift

When you get out at the top, instead of heading off across the bridge
look for a little spiral staircase which goes on up. At the top is a tiny
little café where you can eat grilled sardines. Last time I was there the
full moon was shining over the Douro - impossibly romantic. (I hope it's
still there - that was quite a long time ago.)

That's 'cos it's a Maltese chain. I always stay there on trips to
Lisbon. Secondarily 'cos the the company offices are 2 mins away by
    foot.
That's what I tend to do, between meetings. Eating's fun too.
