Have any other businesses on here been bombarded over the past months by
the PRS to get them to fork out for a licence ?

No. They've targetted you because of the massive loss of revenue due to
those free downloads you host on your gamelan website. People are starving
    in Java because of you.

My mate has... which I find quite amusing given their premise that if you
have the radio on for the benefit of staff and / or customers, you have to
    pay.

Unless I'm mistaken, the radio station has coughed for the rights to
broadcast whatever music it is they're playing to a wider audience, ergo I
suspect the PRS are angling for 'money for old rope'.

Yet another symptom of a society filled with bods trying to make money for
    **** all, really.

You're in good company in this NG methinks, knowing some of the old rope
some of the other regs are punting out for disproportionate amounts of
money, so I wouldn't worry too much.

They hit a mate who runs a tuning shop last year. He finally got them to
piss off after a couple of months of fucking around.

It seems some arsehole has been getting all excitable and contacting
    people without cause.

  7. As per my post in that other place - apparently many chain stores are
cutting back on paying out by using royalty-free and copyright-free
music, depriving the PRS of revenue.
Other factors come in, of course, but if Tesco and others are turning
off the taps, the PRS is hurting, and seeking to chase up the small guys
who had escaped notice until now.

  8. Years ago, they got onto me, after a trade show in which we had a stand,
demanding money for the music that (they claimed) we'd been playing on
    our stand.

I asked them: "What music? We had no sound system and we didn't play no
steenkin' music."[1] and the cunts shut up.

[1] Actually, I think I phrased it a little bit more forcefully than
    that.

Just a fishing expedition, it seems.

    <thinks>

If I plan it right I could be right on the money for around when I turn 40,
at which point I could go out and buy the bestest ever blinged up pimp wagon
and therefore make sure the whole world knew I was having a midlife crisis.

  12. *Anecdotal warning*

Adrian a local at my pub is registered with the Performing Rights people
as he has published several songs that have been recorded by at least
    one well known artist.

He has yet to received a single penny from them.

The list of excuses they come out with for not paying his royalties cast
into shadow the excuses insurance companies use to not pay out.

He says that the whole thing is a con biased in favour of big names
paying large amounts and huge profits to the performing rights people.

    Cultural sponsorship of some kind

They do put on concerts from time to time if you're interested, although
I've not been in contact with him for a couple of years

I've seen a couple of concerts at SOAS (School of Oriental and African
Smoking) Its an amazing instrument but the numbers of people required to
play is a bit high. And Damn they're heavy.

    That's a stock normal shouty-winged big-arched Lotus Carlton. They
aren't as shouty as you remembered them being. By today's standards
    they are positively understated.
