OT : Parking in Athens

Discussion in 'UK Motorcycles' started by Speedgazebo MOTP #1, Jul 18, 2010.

  1. In a few weeks 4 of us are on a cruise that docks for a day at Pireas,
we want to see the Corinth canal and get to the Acropolis, my plan is
to arrange a hire car to be delivered to the port when the boat docks,
use it for the day before having it collected from the ship in the
late afternoon. Has any one here driven in Athens and parked near the
Acropolis and can suggest a car park ?

A bit of a long shot, I know.

Driving in Athens is an experience. I've done it in a cage and as a passenger
on a moped. Whilst it's not as bad as Cairo, it was memorable. Mopeds are a
much easier way to get around the city, IMO.

IIRC (and this was many moons ago) parking isn't too much of an issue. You
can either park on the streets around the area or there are lots of car parks
in the area. Check maps.google.com and search for "Acropolis, Athens, Greece,
    Parking"

Why not take a taxi? They're not as expensive as somewhere like London and
probably much more convenient. The Metro is even cheaper, very easy to use
and also has an Akropolis station.

Driving in Athens is great fun. I lived there for years. Just aim to miss
the other traffic, don't be surprised by *anything* and you'll be fine.

Parking near Acropolis - easy, it's got it's own car park. I've driven up to
it a few times, including on summer Sundays and never had a problem getting
a space. Last one I got was the nearest one to the entrance.

If it's only a day though, you'd be better off getting the Metro from
Piraeus to the Acropolis, it costs bugger all and doesn't take long. It's
also *much* less stressful than driving in Athens if you've never done it
before. Or, as Cab suggested, take a taxi. Metro is cheaper and more fun
    though

  4. Wait, you want to hire a car to leave it in a carpark?

Between four of you, I bet taxis wouldn't cost much different and would
    enable drinkage etc.
