For some reason I thought this was going to be a continuation of the I
robot thoughtstream, and came up with predictions about a future football
    match.

Match of the Day After Tomorrow.

I know, don't give up the day job.

Andromeda strain's great until the last 5 minutes or so, when it cuts
off as quickly as as Fiat Cinquecento.

Well, no one's asking you to like him. A handful of hsi films border
    on genius, tho.

to me, SF is not "fiction about science" it's "scientific fictions"
i.e. describes things that are beyond our current scientific
knowledge/ability or otherwise /other/ to our experience. Nothing in
Andromeda Strain is impossible, or even particularly far fetched.
    so has ER.

so I now gather, my info was from a documentary/bio-pic about Clarke
few years back where he describe the process of making the film, which
entailed "making it up as they went along" - obviously he must have
just meant the dialogue/micro-plot etc, if he'd already written a
    similar book previously.

It could have classed as SF at the time then, but not now.

it was written/filmed in the early 70s - what took place in the film
that was beyond the technology of the time?

Big question. I saw Star Wars in the Odeon Leicester Sq. on the second
day of public showing. The sound effects and stuff fair blew me away.
Now it is all rather passe.

Ai. I was 10 at the time and therefore probably "prime target
    audience".

.... and it has to be put in context with other SciFi films of its
time. Battlestar Gallactica was released a year later.

Which brings up the question, should it be the quality of effects (for the
time that it was made) or the plot/story of the film that makes it the
    best?
