Yeah, I enjoy him. You don't have to think too hard about what he's
writing but there is a depth to it.
Yes. I've read them all at some point by borrowing from the library,
but it's been a few years and I want to own them.

No, it isn't. The 3rd episode is.

One day he may even get round to the 9th.

Maybe, yes, they certainly didn't have the character that the original
three had, but still a good story nonetheless.
Erm, there will be two more since once the next episode comoes out :p

Indeed, even the 'Robot' books are fairly easy to follow as far as
    sci-crime goes.
Well worth having IMHO, I must admit my copies of the original three are
a bit dead, and could do with being renewed.

    Was that 2001?

I meant bollocks that it had /nothing/ to do with the originals (which
would make crap movies, as would most SF books of the time).

no, because the book of 2001 was written after the film (which Clark
and Kubrick literally made up as they went along).

So what was "the best SciFi film of all time"?

    Captain fucking Nemo?

I seem to remember a short story by Clark, pre the film, about
astronauts finding a dark coloured monolith on the moon which gave some
kind of directions to a moon of Jupiter (or maybe it was Saturn - long
time ago:) ). There they found a second monolith but I can't remember
how it ended. Anyway, thats the basic plot for the first part of 2001.

you might be correct, but the main body of the film/all the dialogue
etc. was written as the filmed.

It's a difficult question to answer, but it's definitely not "Star
Wars" (which isn't even really SF, just pulp Space Opera).

I've a fond spot for "Silent Running", and can still find enjoyment in
"Dark Star", but I think the best SF[1] is probably "Quatermass and
    the Pit". Scary as ****.

[1] only dorks call it SciFi, BTW

Depends an awful lot on what you define as Science Fiction.

The "Andromeda Strain" is an all time favourite; Quatermass is in there
    at the photo finish.

"The Day the Earth Caught Fire" is great for its home counties
Englishness. Another favourite is Woody Allen's "Sleeper".

    I was quoting.

oh yes - Blade Runner, definitely.
a little, sure - but it scared the **** out of me when I was little,
    and that's what counts.
Science Fiction is SF. Fantasy is Fantasy.

    for sure.
Andromeda Strain isn't SF, by my definition.
    I *detest* Sleeper.

Where does it come then? As I would have had it as a strong contender as
    textbook SF.

    It's got scientist in it.
Heh, the orgasmatron stuff is shite but the scene where the car, after
much effort, is dumped in 3 foot of water amuses me.

I am correct. Just googled for Clarke and found a book called "The
Sentinel" written in 1951 which is roughly the first half of 2001. The
dialogue and look/feel of the film is pure Kubrick but the plot is much
    older.

I read that recently. It's in a collection of short stories called
"Journey to earth" or something like that.
