    @newsfe3-gui.ntli.net:

So, overpriced rather than doubly overpriced then.

Really? Seemed like a bit of a bargain to me. Jekel do seem to have a
very good reputation & lots of awards under their belt.

Jolly good, I like both. Can you work real ale in too, just for some
    form of completeness?

Question: Do people only drink Rioja as Spanish wine in the UK?

For Spain's best I'd give a try to Ribera del Duero D.O. and Priorat D.O.,
but there seemf to be almost nothing in the site.

There are a few interesting things from the Torres folks in the Penedes D.O.
I'd try before an unknown Rioja... unless you want to drink a brand with a
    fine touch of hype.

Aside from tintos, there is a white Viña Sol,

    edes&R=7269616&Btk=Descriptors
but I'd rather go to white Viña Esmeralda for the mix of Moscatell and
    Gewurztraminer, love it!

Added values for Penedes is that it has very good twisty roads just 20 miles
away from Barcelona... nice to go riding there and stopping at the wine
    cellars :)

Domènec emerged from their own little world to say
No. However, some people do not like to try something unfamiliar
I've not tried them. Laithwaites have a Ribera for £24.99 a bottle.
    http://www.laithwaites.co.uk/produc...HS01S1&fwid=&imi=&rf=false&product_code=35187
    and a Priorat for £26
    http://www.laithwaites.co.uk/produc...HS01S1&fwid=&imi=&rf=false&product_code=34368
It's not often that I buy a bottle of wine at that price.
I expect they are 10 Euros in Spain?
Yes. I've certainly drunk some very pleasant wines from Penedes. I think
some may have been Torres but I can't be sure.

I've had some reds from Valdepenas and especially Calatayud that have been
better than Rioja of the same price. For example
    http://www.laithwaites.co.uk/produc...HNRWSQGFJPWWHS01S1&refer=&fwid=&imi=&rf=false
This sounds very interesting. I have not tried many Spanish whites but
the Gewurz is is a grape I like in New World whites.
    Thanks for the tips.

    I understand.
I found exactly the Valtravieso Reserva Ribera '96 at 69 EUR
    http://www.elcorteingles.es/vinos/buscador/resultados.asp?txtNombre=Valtravi
    eso
and Clos de l'Obac '99 ('97 in Laithwaites) 43,78 EUR (use the search
    feature)

These 6 bottles prices are certainly good, we should see delivery charges.
El Corte Ingles should not add delivery charges (at least they deliver free
of charge when buying a certain amount in metropolitan areas in Spain).
Torres is the giant, certainly. And then the Cava guys as Freixenet and
Codorniu, but I'd keep some smaller makers of "Spanish champagne", specially
    Torelló.
Drank it a short while ago! :) Calatayud is a small D.O. similar to
Priorat, but not as pricey... I discovered it when looking for a good wine
from Aragon (dad was born there and it is sort of going back to my roots)
and was certainly surprised for the quality price ratio.

Valdepeñas has been traditionally the low cost supplier for Spanish amrket,
but I don't know what they are doing lately, sorry.

Try its 15% with 85% Muscat (Viña Esmeralda) and enjoy something different.
Actually, after it I don't enjoy much the 100% Gewurzs... but that's
    personal.
    Glad to do it.

Time for a little "Scotland's smallest distillery" Edradour 10 years old
    malt now, then sleep.

I bought some Old Speckled Hen last night in Tesco.
I think it was £1.89 a bottle. There were no discounts,
special offers or minumum purchase amount.

    It was very nice.

sure, you've got ready access to wine at a sensible and uninflated
    price.

But you've got to live with the dagos.
