On the gas, in a FWD car, you shouldn't lose the back end, the car will
    just understeer, sometimes a lot.

What exactly were you trying to do that caused this freaky occurence?

Depends on the car. If there's more weight at rear it's quite possible
to induce a rear-wheel slide in some circumstances.

Is that when it goes wobbly and you think ooo it shouldn't have done
that? You can add understeer to the list of terms that i really don't
know exactly what it is describing - much like torque. (whistles
innocently) I just know it is fine for the school run but no use for
anything else as I can't throw it around like I did in the golf. Still
it was only meant to be a boring school run car.
You know that bend onto the A50 - well if you try to go round it at 95
the back tries to overtake you. But the golf and the ZXR do it with no
probs so how was I supposed to know the thing wouldn't? That was the
first one. Stamping hard on brakes coming up to a roundabout that
wasn't there last time was the second. And it is so slow at the top
end, you need about 5 miles to get it from 95 to 107 which is where it
stubbornly stayed. And I think it needs respraying from dark blue
because invisible to 4 by 4 drivers who kept trying to change lane
when I was next to them. And it's longer and wider which means I have
to think about narrow lanes and parking. Oh and I've made the speakers
sound funny already - I hadn't realised Iron maiden had rereleased
    Number of the beast.

And what's with the top 3 - Iron Maiden, a cover of Against all odds
    and Elvis FFS.

    [understeer]
No, understeer is (hmm how can I best describe this in girly-speak?)
OK.. understeer what happens when you turn the steering wheel to say 2 o
clock, keep the accelerator floored and the car steers as though it's
going at about 10 past 12.. pretty much all front wheel drive cars do
    this, to some extent.
I think I know where you mean. I'd just stick it in top cog early on
and keep the grumble pedal planted, it's a diesel, that's all you can
    do.
That's expected behaviour... surprising you didn't see a roundabout
    until brake stamping distance though.
Like I said the other day, the soul of an accountant..
That's called a new car, on their insurance... I've had a truck do that
to a fiesta I was in, it's exhilarating.
    Chart nonsense, I guess.

Oddly, no. I seem to be completely immune to brewer's droop. I have no
    clue why.

I gather that our chatting on the phone kept Matt awake? Either that or
you just decided to wake him up for the hell of it when you went to bed?

I was knackered this morning and I got 4 and 1/2 hours sleep so I'm not
surprised you were tired. Aside from the usual suicide pheasants my
school run passed without incident. Although I did have an unexpected
encounter with a herd of cows on the way home - car definately needs a
    wash now.
