As the Golf will not get through the MOT I've been looking for school
    run mobiles.

I've been offered an M reg Toyota corolla diesel 2 litre thing. It's
got a full service history and had its timing belt replaced a year
back - what else is likely to go wrong with it?

It's a toyota, therefore it will devour the soul of anyone that sits
inside it, then replace their soul with that of an auditor.

    Don't say you weren't warned.

  3. Grrrr...

As long as it's got a years ticket and is under a grand it's OK.
Plenty of better cars about for less money though. They hold there
value a bit too well for an older car.

Heh, I've just done a search for my old Corolla (D995 VFR). Apparently
it is still on the road, and changed hands again last October.

I pity the person that bought it, as it looked very sound on the
outside but the engine was basically trashed [1]. As in, I was advised
not to bother having the work done to the engine at all, as it wasn't a
    viable option.

I also did a search for my old GPX600 (E351 FRN), and it's still on the
road. I wonder where it lives now.

[1] Totally fucked really, rings were well worn and it burnt oil like
gawd knows what. I put 10.00 worth of petrol to get to work and back
one day and had to fill up again on the way home. The total mileage
    travelled was 14.

I was being really careful when you were in the car in deference to
    your general broken ness.

It's got a fair bit left to run, owner was going to put a year on
before bunging it in the paper.
I'd have to go looking for them though. My mate turned up on the door
step to borrow an envelope and a stamp to send the docs off for the
car he'd just got, so I've acquired his old one.
    Even better.

Yes, but I wasn't trying to imply anything with the reliability, more
that the post made me wonder whether or not my old (not that it looked
it) heap was still going. And, amazingly, it is.
You're probably right on that score.

  17. It was somewhere around Barstow, on the edge of the desert, when the
Nothing. They'll go on forever with regular oil and cambelt changes
(60k, iirc - I think it's the same as mine). The gearbox might peg out
at 200k if used in taxi duty, but the engines and the bits inside just
    work.
