One of my sons is thinking about buying a second hand VW Golf Gate me
    6. What are people’s thoughts on such machines? Are they expensive to
maintain, do they last long, is there a better option for him to
consider. He is looking for a sporty saloon, not too old school.

Whoops, got that wrong then. I stand corrected I assume that I should
    have called it a hatchback.

A Mk 6 will still be under warranty, so not a lot to worry about there.

Dunno about that, my current car I bought from a garage forecourt main
dealer (renault) in December 08 and it came with a full 12 month
warranty, he said even if the engine died and needed replacing then
it's covered and I was quite impressed with this.

However, in the first 12 months it needed 2 windscreen washer pumps,
the dephaser pulley and cam belt, front offside suspension mountings,
complete digital dashboard, rear boot lock, electronic handbrake assy,
battery, and other smaller fiddly bits.

Even now the rear washer wont work and the heater wont work on setting
2, there's also a knock from the front left corner that I need to
    investigate :-/

Surely nobody buys a French car & actually expects it to work for more
    than three months every year?

My wife had one, it was OK if a bit boring. Went well, built well, used a
    lot of fuel.

The scirroco is just a golf with a smaller/uglier body on.

  8. I've had three citroens (BX, 2xZX) and over 250k miles or so had very
    little trouble.

Maybe I should've added a 'modern' in there. I think the ZX was the
    last reliable car Citroen built.

  10. Ah, right. I wouldn't know about modern Citroens. Hmm... I suppose
they are all over 20 years old now. Blimey.

My parents did over 300k miles in their BX with hardly any trouble.
Anything from the C5 on will struggle to get to 3k miles without major
electrical grief. I was briefly thinking of getting one last year as
they seem amazing value for money - then I found out why.

  12. You're probably right. I had two, and they were both excellent.
Neighbour's C5, now gone, was nothing but complcated electrical trouble.

I'd guess that Steve was talking about original manufacturer warranty rather
    that a dealer warranty.

My Mum has a Mk6 GTi with the DSG gearbox. I've no idea on the
running costs or the reliability but it's fun to drive. Plenty quick
enough and the DSG gearbox is excellent.

In terms of better options, well it depends on what he uses it for.
If he does 30k miles a year, a Golf GTi is going to cost him
    <fuckloads> in petrol and tyres.

I had one of those when that stupid bitch wrecked my Passat, it was fucking
*horrible* shite of the worst order.

    Still makes me shudder now.

Doesn't commute just around town, hols, shopping visiting friends etc.
Probaly doesn't even do 10k per year.

I've got the mk6 2.0 GT TDI, which looks much the same, handles well
enough, and can give me 62MPG on a long motorway run.

I'm happy with it, and would probably have another. The GTI would no
doubt be a bit more fun, but the diesel only needs filling up every
    600 or so miles.

Isn't the GTD the diesel equivalent of the GTI? - GT TDIs were never
quite the same when I looked at the MkV.
