OT online glasses suppliers?

Discussion in 'UK Motorcycles' started by Work in progress, Jan 2, 2007.

  1. I vaguely remember ginge and SteveH and others (?) getting glasses
    online.

    1. Where from?
    2. How long did they take to arrive?
    3. Are you happy with them - have they stood up to use over time?

Mine broke while I was away, are just about being held together by
superglue and as the only spare pair I can find are prescription
sunglasses I need to sort some new ones quickly. I can wear contact
lenses in the meantime but I dislike wearing them all day every day.

    About 10 days.
Very happy. They're better than the previous pair I got from Tesco
    opticians.

Katie is happy with hers, too.

The downside is that they're allegedly made by downtrodden Chinese
    peasants earning 50p a year.

Arrived in less than a week.

I can see through them the same as my horribly expensive opticians ones,
dunno about life in normal use as they are my spare pair for when the
    expensive ones get damaged.

    About a week
Yes, other than I dropped them putting my lid on and scratched the lens,
no fault of the manufacture though.

I think next time I want to get good old fashioned glass lenses again,
they're much harder to scratch. Problem is nowhere seems to carry them
    as standard anymore though.

  5. I know you're half joking, but I think you also know I'm serious about
being consistent in my ethical position. As they are located in HK
then I imagine that the manufacture is undertaken in China. So I'm not
going to order from them. Or get anyone else to do so on my behalf.

Now wasn't there a chap who made/distributed lenses here arguing with
    you? Hello? still lurking?

  7. Ta, I shall most likely order through them.
Sods law says Iplace an order then find my non sunglasses spare pair.

  8. Ah these have all the coating and UV stuff as standard. I can see
    comparison pricing happening. Ta Rob.

    worth..

you're attempting not to do business with anyone who has links with
    Chinese manufacturers?

Not impossible, but I'd suggest you don't use /any/ major supermarket
chain (including those do-gooders the Co-Op).

  15. Not yet, though long term I'm intending to only purchase direct from
local suppliers - organic boxed veg and meat is going to be a fairly
    easy switch.

Atm I'm simply not purchasing anything manufactured in China. Which is
surprisingly easy when all I buy is food and books.
As above, long term I'm not going to be.

That's a little trickier when you live where I do. There is an organic
market at Palmer's Green on a Sunday, but IME it's very overpriced and
only slightly higher quality produce than the supermarket chains.
what I was attempting to hint at in my other posts is that you'd be
very surprised how far the western economy is already intermingling
with that of China, and so it's pretty difficult to avoid a (admitedly
convoluted and several steps removed) connection with them. Food as
you've mentioned, is possible to source local produce. However, you
have no way of knowing how much involvement with China that the
sources of such produce have themselves.
And don't go having a pension or bank account with any UK financial
institution either, as AFAICS they're all going pell-mell to get in
bed with the Chinese as quickly as possible.

The only way to be completely sure is to do a Good Life, and frankly
you've not got the arse for the Felicity Kendall role ;-)

Fair play, the labour's probably cheaper in Bracknell.

  20. There's a fair amount of choice here, quite a few farms gone organic
with box schemes and Ashbourne has a couple of outlets. I've not
completely switched yet, as with all things 'tis a work in progress.
Not surprised, I do pay some attention to the machinations of the
    capitalist machine.
Yes, this ethical stuff isn't easy you know.
Up to a point, if you pick a supplier and build a relationship with
them it's straightforward. The alternative communities work hard for
    transparency.

Bugger, what have they been up to then?
My finances are through the coop, which is as ethical as it gets,
nothing's perfect though, all I can do is consider and make the best
    choice based on my values.
Still the long term plan, kids **** off, I sell the house, go and
travel for a couple of years (overland where possible) then settle
somewhere warm at a subsistence level - probably linked to aid
working, we'll see how life pans out. Who knows I may one day be
overtaken by a desire to consume, consume, consume.
See, I think I'm the reverse Bee - people are so taken by her arse
they don't notice the tits and I have the opposite problem <g>
