I'd have said 6/10, but it was a gaiman I hadn't read and so therefore
    devoured.
I've only read 'One of us'. I've not been inspired enough by the blurb
to read any others. Recommendations on where to start?

I read 'I am legend' by Richard Matheson for the first time a couple
of days back and the starkness of that has left me picking up,
starting and then stopping books as none seem to follow on from it.

I'm sad to say this, but the "Future Shocks" story I read in 2000AD in the
    mid-80s did the punchline better.

When he's good, he's very, very good, but this wasn't one of those moments.

Have you read his non-Smith books? And if so, what do you think?

Well, sat on my desk here I've a copy of Only Forward, the same one that
was in your hand only a day or so ago. The first print, of his first
    novel in fact...

Pick it up again next time you're passing.

This from the pile of books on your table? I only noted the business
one and I flicked through 'How late it was, how late', are you sure I
    looked at it?
    First novels are always illuminating.
You're away this weekend aren't you?

It was the other book I took to the hospital, had a black cover.
From about tomorrow lunchtime yeah, I'm back at home now though and
won't be going anywhere until then.

    "Michael Marshall".

Two much more mainstream "psychological thriller"/conspiracy novels -
"The Straw Men" and "The Lonely Dead" (part of a series, so far of 2).

I thought they were good; can't decide if they're also bad.

not a problem; only got them in hardcover though, so postage would be
less than cheap - do you ever get up London way?

AOL. "Only Forward", in particular, is very original. Both are well
    written.
