Why bother. It's been on public release as a beta for >6 months, and
has been patched during this time, plus a large amount of the
underlying code comes from vista, so isn't totally new.

  2. Fairly decent. I've even stuck it on an old tablet PC that was lurking
in a forgotten cupboard here. Works fine.

I'm actively using the RC at work and it's better than XP Pro SP3.
    Vastly better than Vista.

The only problem I've had with Vista, and I mean *only* problem, is
driver support for the 64bit version - is that sorted in 7?

Once you turn UAC off, what's the big problem?

    Is the right answer.

Vendor drivers, particularly from the likes of Lenovo, aren't going to
be the problem. It's third-party devices, like my Topfield PVR. To
access that via USB I have to map the device through to a virtual USB
hub on a 2003 Std x86 VM which isn't impossible but it is a bit more
    arse-ache than I'd prefer.

I'd like to just be able to turn off driver signing, permanently.

Using the 64bit version of 7. It installed on my 2 year old Thinkpad
T60p without prompting for anything and everything works.

I wouldn't recommend installing WebSphere Portal 6.0 on it though,
    that was a right ****.

Ahh. Got to admit it's something I've not hit as a problem. I built
theis machine myself, but all the parts are mainstream enough to just
    be auto-detected.

As I said before, vendor drivers (for the machine itself) aren't likely
to be an issue, but third-party devices (such as a PVR) are a little
    more questionable.

That said, why Topfield couldn't just have the PVR either present itself
as a USB hard disk or hook in to the LAN and present a samba share I
    don't know.

IME yes. It's definitely faster on my Thinkpad than XP was.

That's a big change. Put Vista on an XP machine and it runs like a dog
    usually.

  16. Vista seems fine to me. But then again, I'm so technical these days
that I don't even know what UAC is.

It's the thing that prompts you for confirmation every time you try and
do something. Easily disabled via the Users control panel.

In both instances yes, remarkably so going from Vista Pro on a 3 year
    old desktop.

    Yes, it did, I tried.

I'm doing tasks on this machine (writing code, running IBM WebSphere
servers) that take long enough to do that you really notice them being
shorter. And they are considerably. I was very surprised.
