Happily connects but no one's ever online?

Tried MSN Messenger, its online brother, and Trillian, all the same.

I've twiddled settings on the ADSL router, made sure it has absolutely
no firewall turned on, checked the hosts file on the XP boxen, disabled
the XP SP2 firewall (disabled by default), reinstalled, tried adding in
the ports that need forwarded to get file transfer, etc working, no joy.

Looking at the logs from Trillian and MSN M they both connect happily
to the server, but no one is online.

    Am I going mad?

Is there a "test" user I can check?

    Any ideas? I'm stumped.

Ok, it works from one laptop using the old Windows Messenger. I suspect
one of the settings I changed in the ADSL/router unbroke it.
(IIRC I turned off multicast broadcast and turned on IPX RIP/SAP?)
