  1. Looks like Liverpool has some competition;

"A vigil will be held in Nottingham on Friday in memory of Danielle
Beccan, the teenager shot and killed as she returned home from a fair.
During the vigil, Danielle's family will wear ribbons in her favourite
colours, pale blue and pink, to remember the schoolgirl.
A gospel choir will sing in the central square before bells are rung out
across the city to mark the beginning of a minute's silence at 1230 BST.
Buses and trams will pull over so the minute's silence can be held, while
    some shops will close."

For Christ's sake. Some (admittedly unfortunate) kid is in the wrong
place at the wrong time and all of a sudden she's a martyr.

I suppose we'll be hearing about how she was a star pupil, would have
gone on to great things, been a brain surgeon or a ballet dancer....

She was a black kid in a shitty part of the world. Her prospects were
close to zero. So I suppose she's achieved more by being killed than
she's likely to have achieved had she lived longer, if only because by
stopping the traffic for a few moments, people who've got more
important things to do can get to where they want to do them.
They'll be naming a park after her next.....

I think the difference is that the people of Nottingham only do this
when innocent kids get shot. There's a shooting in St Anns on average
every six months, this is the first one that really made the headlines.

    headlines.

Only because she was female, a teenager, and moderately pretty. Had she
been the average Nottingham munter, nobody would have cared at all.

It was particularly traumatic for MacDonalds. Their recruitment service is
still reeling from the impact of the Stephen Lawrence execution.

I'd like to propose a few seconds silence for that missing "r".

I was saying to my dad earlier, soon we're going to be like fucking
monks, unable to talk as one two-minute silence blends seamlessly into
    the next.

It'll be Margaret Hassan next, you'll see. She's lived in Iraq for
thirty years, but some town'll claim her as their own once she gets
    slotted.

Moved out about 6 years ago. The crowning glory was a yardie get together in
Harley Rd when the they had a sort out and filled a load of cars and people
with bullet holes[1]. Nobody said a thing until a couple of them appeared at
A & E leaking rather badly, when apparently the janitorial types got quite
    excited.

Another time a mate who lives in Mexico City came to stay and was very
impressed by the way the swarm of armed police kicked in the next door
    neighbours door at 4.00am.
    Aha - the posh end.

  13. I missed all that. The most recent thing to happen was that father and
daughter that got executed in that bedsit. That was just round the
corner from where I lived next door to the off licence.
Yeah, there was a crack house at the end of our road and they went in
mob handed all done up in riot gear and everything. Two hooli vans and
    about 15-20 coppers IIRC.
    Aye, the posh end...
Yeah, thank gawd I moved as well. There was never a dull moment.
    Heh.

FFS. I cancelled that post within about 20 seconds of sending it.
And your reply was a couple of minutes after its replacement. Hmmm.

  18. I think quite a few parents will let teenagers out on their own to a
fair, if they're going as a group.
