Andy has just bought me an aspire one netbook for Chrimbley which is
    running linux lite [1]

so I need a newsreader. anyone want to recommend one? I'm used to
    using Agent on windows.

[1] if you need to know which flavour you'll need to tell me how to
    find out.

You'd be better off dumping the bundled version of linux and putting a
copy of ubuntu on it, the version of linux that comes on it is so
locked down version of Linpus and it's shit for installing more
    software.

Is your machine one with a hard drive, or not?

    Wipe it and install Windows.

I got the Linux version and did this - it runs XP Pro very well.

    Mozilla Thunderbird.
    Alpine.
    Seamonkey.
    knode.
    slrn.

I'd go for Thunderbird as it's the one I am familiar with and it's
    available for Windows and Unix/Linux.

OK, same as mine then and I've been through most of this whilst
playing around with the machine so have all the stuff that's needed to
get it set up off a USB Key, get the wireless working, etc.

Easiest suggestion is that you drop in here with it next time you're
passing on the way to/from Liverpool and I can set your machine up
with an up to date version of ubuntu and all the other stuff you might
    need.

It probably already has one built in to the browser. If not it will
probably have tin or slrn, its all a matter of taste.

Out of interest, what the boot time like? I've tried Kubuntu and Xubuntu
on mine and they were both very slow compared to Linpus. After I'd stuck
opensuse on it (which is what I normally use / know) it ran like a dog.
Went back to unlocked Linpus, plus the kernel modules for bluetooth and
it boots in sub 20 seconds again.

Agree with this too. But Ubuntu 8.10 is definitely usable, moreso
than 8.04 was, especially if you add netbook-remix 1.01 for the
auto-full-screen apps doodah (and it's free).

Not sure.. I'll time it next time I reboot..

I believe there are optimised kernels out there that match the boot
    time of linpus.
