Further to a thread somewhere up there ^^ I am definitely going to have
to buy some memory for my ailing box. However no one can agree on what
    type of memory it needs.

Its a Dell Poweredge 1800 server (In theory! Its what the badge on the
    front says. In practice...?)

"Crucial" init, claim that it needs, in a we're right you're wrong email,

Dual Rank DDR2 PC4200 533mhz ECC Registered, in pairs.

And tell me its probably a PE 1750. To their credit they didn't use the
    word "mong" once.

Dell are as per expectations are not too clear on anything at all and
really couldn't give a flying ****, due to its being out of waranty, but
    the general concensus is.

Dual Rank DDR2 PC3200 400mhz ECC Registered, in pairs.

Upon sliding the poorly box delicately out of its rack, popping the lid
and whipping out the dead stick for examination, its a 1.8v 240pin dimm,
    sticker on it says;

    512mb 1Rx4 PC2-3200R-333-10-C1

Now not being an expert by any means, I would assume that this is
    a. 512mb in size (good work me) b. Single Rank (guessing here) and
    c. 333mhz (?)

    So this leaves me .........
Confused. Very very confused and I haven't even been drinking.

Anyone have any ideas on how to clear this up and get the right memory?

Emailing Dell was of course my first thought but after hours of examining
their web site. I still cannot find any method of doing this. I am sure
phoning them would result in encountering a mass of telephone revenue
generating menu systems and would of course ultimately be useless terms
of gathering solid information from william / Gupta. (Phone calls!
They're not worth the paper they're written on anyway)

    Advice please.

Buy these. If Dell are right, AFAIK it'll still work.

The machine came with one stick of PC2-3200 but will run faster with pairs ,
and will also support PC2-4200 for a modest gain.
Buy what Crucial say , as faster memory is downwards compatible anyway and
almost certainly no difference in price.

It would be if it gave out the same memory as what the rest claim.

Well that would involve going to a shop spending a fortune on a copy of
windows. Which has never particularly struck me as a good idea.

    Only for promoting further confusion.

I have ordered 2x 2gig Dual Rank PC3200 400mhz ECC Registered sticks from
a company on the internet. This transaction is currently going in a very
sub-optimal manner. We'll see how they do before I name and shame but I
did find it a bit strange them demanding a scan of my credit card sent
via plain unencrypted email after they have already processed the
transaction via https and had away the money.

Oh FFS. Why didn't you just buy the memory from Crucial once it was
determined what you needed to stick into the server? The above doesn't
really sound like a shop I'd want to do business with and anything I
ever ordered from Crucial just worked. On set of DIMMs years back
eventually stopped doing that and they exchanged them without a fuss
even though I didn't have a receipt for them anymore.

  8. Dells tend to have a "Service Tag" on each computer (since at least
2002), a sticker with a 6-or-7 digit alphanumeric tag and a barcode, stuck
on the back or sides. It's also registered in the BIOS. With that code
you can go to their web-site (presumably in the country it shipped...),
go to "Support" and find out the original equipment when it shipped,
    service manuals, etc.

Funnily enough, we couldn't find the service tag on one of our 50
latest PowerEdges last week. Haven't heard if Grid Guru got it out of a
    BIOS yet.
