I am thinking of growing my hair long again, kind of like a return to
    my mis-spent youth..

does anyone know if long hair is fashionable for bloke these days ?
Would I need to get a Harley or is that OTT

If you're pursuing your mis-spent youth[1], you're too old for fashion to be
an issue. You might as well do what you want, you'll be dead soon anyway.
Nah, long-haired guys on Harleys look good, and it's a cheaper form of
mid-life crisis than shagging a researcher and getting caught.

Was it ever? I always felt that having long hair was more of an
    anti-fashion statement, if anything.
Harley riders, however, are very much dictated to by fashion, and long
hair is definitely not in for them. In fact, any hair at all is quite
    unusual in their age group.

Fashion? All the sheep have their grade 2/3/4 done at the back, that's
the "fashion". But really, WGAF? Unless you're going to get extensions,
then let it grow. If many people take the piss, and you don't like it,
then get it cut again. Nothing lost.

the longer the hair the more consonants you must have in your harley.

for instance if it's more than shoulder length you would be looking at
    something like

    flxtsxsflvlxvtcvf

if you have shorter hair you can get away with simple one syllable
harleys like "big rod", "road boy", etc.

My son of 7 wears something like that, occasionally. About sums it up.

My mistake was, the researcher was the father of one of Laura's friends, so
word got around a bit quicker than I'd expected.

    It makes you look older.

Perfect, but it's got to be a Fat Boy with tassels everywhere. And you've
got to wear chaps. With silver buttons down the side.
