    See, that's progress for you.

Still a piece of piss I'd have to pay someone for, though...

Heh. But that appears to sum up most of my self-propelled vehicles,
even those that were in supposedly good order when I bought them...

Indeed, saves mucho labour charges :)
Yes, but they aren't as expensive to fix as later boxes.

A1 Motor Accessories, Catherine Street, St Albans - or about 100 metres
up the road from where I work.

It's one of those now rare old bits 'n' bobs shops, and he (Tony) never
throws anything away (being a tight old git), it's been there for at
    least 40 years.

Aha! I've found a VW carb inna box(1) in the garage. Twin-choke
Pierburg, it is. Auto choke and everyfink. Interested?

    1. And a set of GTi springs, a wiper mechanism ...

You only needed the autochoke side though

Yeah, maybe. Getting hold of either the autochoke bits or the manual
    conversion kit is pretty tricky.

Eurospares and German&Swedish don't carry either in stock.... on back
    order.

Seems that the 2B2/5 carb is regarded as trash these days and replaced
with a manual twin-choke Weber as soon as it goes wrong.
