ot Is there anything like Sendmail for windoze?

Discussion in 'UK Motorcycles' started by steve auvache, May 3, 2004.

  1. I am getting pissed off with the ever increasing piles of spam that
admitting an email address brings. I simply don't want to see it.
Sadly Force9 don't do ISP spam filtering so I have to deal with the
    whole lot myself.

Turnpike was fine dealing with it when it was low volumes from a few
spamhouses and not much virus infected stuff. That was until recently,
then the spam filtering and response mechanisms started showing their
age so I put mailwasher on the front end.

Mailwasher is fine but in some respects is not automatic enough and in
others a little to clever for it's own good so it cannot safely be left
    to it's own devices.

I like Turnpike 5. It does everything I want, except spam related
stuff, in a way that suits me and I would be sad to see it go but
something has to be done. I could do it with a linux box and sendmail
but I haven't got a spare box so I am looking for a similar solution in
    windoze.

I've used different versions of Mercury for a long time - the latest
version is even better. Have a look at
    http://www.pmail.com/whatsnew/m32401.htm .

This is just a post-office, but it has lot's of spam filtering options
etc. - you send and recieve mail using the client of your choice, just
set your sending and receiving server to be Mercury (or the machine it's
    on).

There's a PC in my loft you can have if you want. Don't know how the
tenants will feel about you going round to pick it up, though...

  4. That sounds very much like what I am looking for.

    Evaluation in progress.

Nice offer but I will see what I can do on one machine first.

Although if they are female and inclined to walk around the house in
their underwear I might nip round there early one morning.

It might be a bit too 'industrial' strength for home, but I quite liked
it. It's got a bit of scripting stuff with it too, and you can do
simple things, like make it expand all attachments and then fire up your
AV to scan them before it puts them in your mailbox.

I've been looking into a nice little (free) program called PopFile. It
sits as a pop3 proxy between whatever mail client you use and your pop3
server[1]. It can tag the subject line or add an X-header.

They reckon 500 mails should see it pretty accurate, but after just 20
or so it's pretty much up to speed. I've tried and tested it on the
older generation - it gets the thumbs up.

    Have a look at popfile.sourceforge.net

[1] with an add-in it'll do exchange too.

  9. It is looking that way tbh. I haven't actually persuaded it to connect
to force9 yet but I have high hopes. I will have a go with it and see
    how I get on.

The multiple domains bit could be a bonus worth suffering for as I
currently run three for me and soon hope to add at least two business
ones, plus the .co* and .ltd variations on the theme.

Yebbut I don't use MS mail and web clients I don't need anti-virus
beyond a bit of common sense. Although I dare say I shall be
reluctantly forced to once I start trading.

I always used it with the SMTP server listening to the outside world and
had mail delivered direct. You can use the POP3 client to collect mail
from as many POP3 mailboxes as you like. Which is nice.
Yes - that would be handy.
It never does any harm to virus scan incoming (and outgoing) emails -
Whilst it doesn't give full peace of mind, it does add another layer of
    defence.

I don't care if it's written in French with crayons. It works, and it
doesn't make things (noticeably) slower. It's also free - what more do
you want? A haircut to go with it?

  13. No it fucking isn't. The fucking thing steadfastly refuses to actually
contact the outside world, despite the fact it is absolutely convinced
    it is doing it.

It will lose. I know this. It is only a matter of time.

Seconds pass and it dials. Excellent. The next trick, after finding
out what it has done with the 3 messages, will be getting it to
    disconnect.

Unless it has been set up with the users (and/or aliases) it will
quietly chuck them away. If it knows Steve@ and gets a mail for Steven@
it will bin it - unless you've told it to accept mail to unkown users.

  16. It is not what it does with the messages that will be the issue and I
don't give a shit about them because according to mailwasher the are for
user "w15ktr2" who for some reason gets loads of virii and bugger all
exhortations to buy viagra. It is a disconnection thing, third party
software and the Turnpike dialler, we have history.

Can you use the standard Windows dialler? There is a setting somewhere
to allow the use of third party diallers if you really need to.

  18. If I want Turnpike to have hysterics then yes.

I am on it. Just waiting for some more spam to arrive to test it with.

    I do.

I don't give a shit. Even on a dog slow dial up the speed of mail
    processing isn't an issue.

A tad more functionality I fancy. Mercury is looking good. It is
working as far as I can see and only needs tweaking over the next couple
of days to see what it can and can't do.
