If one was to walk into a shop and ask to buy a new iPhone for cash, or even
order it online through O2 and take delivery of it how would one go about
putting one's wife's PAYG vodafone sim in it and making it work.

    Would they sell me one?

Her indoors would like one for chrissy, but does not want a contract.

    Just a thought.

They won't sell you one without you signing up for a contract.

As i thought, but what puzzles me is people can sell them by the shed
load on ebay, where do they get them from?

Then i can go get one :)

But will it work with a Vodafone SIM?
I thought they were all locked in the OS to o2.

Get a good condition boxed one off ebay that is either jailbroken or
jailbreak it yourself. Then just stick in a sim card and away you go.

that's a good point, O2 store near me are even advertising it at the
    moment.

But they'll probably still be locked to O2 and it appears that
unlocking them is a real hack.

Jailbreaking doesn't unlock 3G iPhones. It just allows you to install
    any software.

I've got an iPhone on a contract with O2. I really struggle to see
the point of PAYG. Most of the adverts seem to plug "£10 a week top
ups gets you X". £40 a month is more than my contract costs.

I have an iphone and an N95, Iknow this has been round the block here
before, but I'd have a look at other similar 'phones first. The new
Blackberry storm looks good, although I haven't seen one for real, and
will take a vodafone sim card.
I am not as impressed with the iphone as I thought I would be, it
would be a very expensive 'phone to run on payg, there's no MMS, you
have to email any pics you want to send, you need to go online to see
any MMS's sent to you, and in dosen't take videos.
It's very cool, that certain and if that's why SWMBO wants one, well,
    that's that.

Well some very reputable dealers on ebay who have sold hundreds reckon
the latest 3G ones take all sim cards of any varient, feedback confirms
    this.

But her indoors is not worth what they want for one, I can safely say this
as i know for definate she does not read any newsgroups.

Depends on how much they're charging for the phones - some countries in
Europe require a the availability of a non-simlocked version. But
    they're rather expensive.
I guess we'll find out about that later :)
