"if you’re expecting filth you’ll be disappointed.

looking at photos like these scares and fascinates me in equal doses.
the sheer scale of these holes reminds you of just how tiny you are"

That's quite an impressive collection. The links on the right stole
some of my evening as well.

Having been in a number of somewhat lesser quarries for geological
purposes, even the relatively small Ketton New Quarry manages to total
belittle the individual, it's one of the weirder places I've been.

    Tanya Streeter? Yeah, she's impressive.

The Blue Hole isn't. All the yanks whip up in a frenzy about it because
it's a "130ft dive" - 40m for us youngsters. So they go down and get
buzzed, because they've never been that deep before, they suffer a little
from Nitrogen Narcosis and come up all smiles.

At the time, I'd done a lot of 30-40m dives here at home, so was a little
more used to the "narc". Got down to 40m and yes there were some
impressive stallactites/mites, but they were freaking huge - too big to
really appreciate from close up, and the dive guides didn't want people to
go out away from the wall, so you couldn't go and get a hazy wide view
    either.

The nice bit for me was when I stopped for a deep decompression stop, all
the others (who didn't do such things) carried on ascending to 9m. I was
then able to take a photo of the group silloueted against the blue circle
of light. Made a reasonable pic did that.

Overall though, the dive wasn't worth it.

But isn't that one difficult to see from the air because it's narrow at
the top, and surrounded by forest?

Sir needs to have a read of Martyn Farr's book The Darkness Beckons.
It's got some excellent photos taken in Andros when divers were going
for the World distance record into a cave and were using habitats to
    decompress.

I used to know a couple of the guys who went on the second expedition
and they said that (at the time) it was the best cave diving in the
World without a shadow of a doubt.

I'd offer to UR my copy of the book but I'm fucked if I know where it
is. The dust cover's in the bookcase but it seems to have been parted
from the book, it must be in a box in the roof.

What I have found is a late '80s paperback copy of Sheck Exleys book
covering basic cave diving which is very scarey and a copy of the
second edition of the CDG manual which was published in 1990 which
though scarey is actually very good.

  17. An aquatic version of 7 of 9?
    When ever I've done 40m+ I don't get Narc-ed but where I've dived I've
always found it cold and dark. I've got to like warm and light.
Cave diving would spook me and I don't mind admitting it.

I've done minor wreck penetration all good under control but it still
spooks me a little. I've done a large number of wrecks in the North Sea
and else where, most of them are second word war and have collapsed,
some are surprisingly intact (Thistlegorm) including one North Sea one
with two steam trains on their side on the deck.
But I'm not in the league of some of the guys I've dived with who have
been known to take their BCD off to squeeze through a gap in a wreck and
then pull their gear through after them.

Sucking his keyboard for inspiration, Andy Bonwick typed:
Just checked, and my copy has vanished. ****. Brilliant book. IIRC, when
it was written, cave divers had about the same life expectancy as a WWII
fighter pilot. Hopefully, thinks have improved since then. I've never
dived in a cave, and never wanted to. A ten-foot sump was about my limit.

I think all divers know that cave divers are a special kind of bonkers.
Just reading some of the exploits from that GUE crowd confirmed it for me.
I'm sure there's some amazing dives to be had in caves.
Very kind. In the meantime, I'll add it to my list of things to look out
    for.

I'd like to ask "who", but having seen a couple of episodes I know who
you're referring to, although can't picture her. I thought the series was
quite dull though. But then after Babylon 5, most sci-fi series' were.
I have had a couple. One euphoric one, and one panic one. Thankfully the
latter happened not long after it happened to a mate. I was able to
realise what was going on and forced myself to calm down. I guess the
fact that I could do that meant I wasn't really panicked in the first
    place, but it wasn't nice.
I've done some, which were more like caverns I suppose, in l'Estartit. On
one, we'd found a different entrance than we were supposed to, as it was
supposed to be an easy swim through. I squeezed through a gap into a
chamber and realised there was only 1 way out. Which I did, pretty
    quickly.
