I doubt they can / will do anything. Do you have a router / firewall installed? As others have said, there almost certainly wouldn't be any, This is a classic example of a rather nifty little utility being usurped by spammers. It would have been nice if MS had built some kind of security into it though....... -- Catman MIB#14 SKoGA#6 TEAR#4 BOTAFOF#38 Apostle#21 Tyger, Tyger Burning Bright (Remove rust to reply) Alfa 116 Giulietta 3.0l. And would sir care to mention how a pornographic image can be sent and received through Windows' Messenger, a text-only protocol/app?
I would presume that the image is not transmitted via WM, but the url and code to launch the default browser and load the image are transmitted. However, I'm not an IT monkey, so ICBW.
That's how I think it's done. However, the honourable slider is welcome to plug a windows machine with that feature enabled inot an unfiltered connection and stidy the effect for himself. -- Catman MIB#14 SKoGA#6 TEAR#4 BOTAFOF#38 Apostle#21 Tyger, Tyger Burning Bright (Remove rust to reply) Alfa 116 Giulietta 3.0l. Indeed, if messenger supported such things then this would be a valid assumption. However it is a plain text system that does very little interpretation of the contents of the message. Upwardly barking at incorrect trees is what's happening here.
Slider wrote: Well, I don't know about that. I just do what I'm told. I had the same problem, and got this advice. "Admin tools, Services. Highlight "Messenger" Stop it, then right click and disable it." That solved the problem, this was in XP, mind.
That will stop a number of problems, especially Messenger spam; however, it is not the route of the OP's problem with porn appearing, as pictures cannot be transmitted nor linked to using the protocol (unless it was ascii art).
In uk.rec.motorcycles, Catman said: If you're using XP or 2000 it can easily be turned off in the services.
Our Network Nazis have blocked a load of stuff here, but we still get that happening a lot, esp. when viewing the BBC site. Still, it brightens up my day.
Something smells a bit fishy here. You didn't see the image, the adult in the room didn't see the image and the kids didn't tell the teachers about it just their parents. So you don't really know how pornographic the image really was or if indeed their actually was an image in the first place.
It wasn't ASCII art, t'was proper porn. It was appearing, after doing the above, it did not. If WM was not the cause then it's a bit of a coincidence that it stopped when I turned off WM. As I said, I'm not an IT bod, so I'd be pleased to learn where the pron messages were coming from, and why turning off WM stopped it.
MattG wrote: [snip] It may suprise you to learn that this was an attempt at humour. I would be inclined to put it down to coincidence, messenger is benign[1]. [1]As long as your system is patched up to date and hence not as susceptible to the buffer overflow antics of nasty people, ala Slammer.
No, I rather guessed that. Ok, fair enough. I'm always interested in picking up bits of information about stuff.
Could be interesting, although complex due to the fact that Messenger doesn't use a fixed-width font. Ultimately quite rewarding though, I should imagine
But he could check the history files couldn't he? Is there any way of knowing the difference between an image or window 'just popping up', a link that's been clicked on (knowingly or unwittingly leading to uunsuitable material), and a link that's been typed/pasted in by the scrotes themselves?
Well, I'm always happy to learn, I'm sure I read it somwhere though, and I *know* it's worked on at least two client systems. There may be a piece of spyware involced as well. -- Catman MIB#14 SKoGA#6 TEAR#4 BOTAFOF#38 Apostle#21 Tyger, Tyger Burning Bright (Remove rust to reply) Alfa 116 Giulietta 3.0l. I spoke to the adult and all the kids today and it turns out it was just an arse. Not acceptable but not what I was imagining as 'porn'. I still had to phone parents etc as they were worried.
Did that and I looked at the cookies that spybot threw up. Nada, apart from ebay and usual stuff that i'd looked at. It has been suggested that they typed something in. I've used the system for over 5 years. The IT bod and myself tried to access undesirable sites 5years ago when they were first installed. We couldn't even send a mail with the word 'arse' in it! We certainly couldn't get into any adult sites etc.
