OT How did that happen?

Just been told by some parent that there was some porn suddenly popped up on
the school PC's today (wet playtime).
The kids were playing games on the bbc website when a rather candid pic of a
    lady appeared.

Now I know that these things aren't perfect, and I've now spyware cleaned
    the machine but we've never
had a problem before as we use an externally filtered server. This is the
first time this has happened in 5 years!

BTW its out policy to have an adult in the room when on the internet.
How can I now assure parents and staff that the computers are safe to use?
To say I'm pissed off is an understatement. I've spent the last 5years
    installing and building confidence
in these as a learning tool and this incident could really spell the end of
any sort of freedom of use.

    Sorry for the rant.

Well I'm all for them learning by experience and not wrapping them up in
    cotton wool.
However pictures of naked women suddenly popping up on a 7 year olds screen
    pisses me off a bit.

  4. Yeah, so would I be if I hadn't kept my private porn collection properly
    hidden.

Well if it was, at least I'd know what to do about it.
As it stands it could happen again at any time.

Sounds to me like the windows messenger port being left open, and
    allowing a pop up?

    What OS are these running?

You can't - they aren't safe - however you have a responsible person in
the room monitoring and assisting at all times.

That's much more than most of them have at home, and about as much as
    you can do.
It shouldn't - unless the parents are all fuckwits.

  12. Is "Wet Playtime" one of those films unsuitable for kiddies?

    Block port 135.

Windows messenger isn't the same as MSN messenger.

Winows messenger is used to send admin alerts to clients to "save your
shit cos we're cutting you off in five minutes" sort of thing and has
been used as an exploit for sending spam, amongst other things.

    Google is your friend.

    HTH :)

Ooops, didn't get that quite right, old boy. It's the port for net send
and stuff so that's how the buggers are doing it (if that's what they're
    doing at all) :)

Ta, at least I can phone the ISP with some ideas.
I have no evidence as I cleaned everything in a panic that it would happen
    in my afternoon lesson.

The kids shut it down quickly and told their parents when they got home.
I'll grill the adult tomorrow. After all if they can't monitor it then it'll
    have to go off.

TBPH, my knowledge of all this stuff is rusty at best, it's been a long
    while since I "dabbled" ;-)

I'd test it with something like 'net send 127.0.0.1 hello' or something
but then I don't want to be teaching my Grandmother how to suck eggs :)

    Good lucksy :)
