I took the eldest lad to the guitar show at Cheltenham Town Hall today. One
of the acts we saw was Amrit Sond http://www.amritsond.com/about.html. ****
me that bloke can play! It's not the sort of music I'd go out and buy but I
can really appreciate the musicianship. He manages to make a guitar sound
like a whole band and plays just about any part of the instrument that will
make a noise. Sort of an acoustic version of Hendix.

  2. Way too unstructured and experimental sounding for my liking.

Is Sir aware of Rodrgio y Gabriela? If there's tickets left, I'm off
    to see them next week.

    Orion (Metallica):
    Tamacun (Rod y Gab):

and here's the how to for Tamacun:
it impresses me even at a slow tempo!

Oh yes I agree, just awesome playing though
    (5 minutes long)
I must admit that acoustic guitar doesn't do much for me unless it's
accompanied by a shit hot fiddle player or a good singer. Just guitar on its
    own leaves me cold.

Have a look on YouTube for "Richard Kennedy". Not the best singer in the
world, but his acoustic renditions of normally rock band songs are bloody
    good.

    Here you go..

  8. If you want to hear a guitarist who can make a guitar sound like a
whole band, check out Bob Brozman. He tours the world playing his
music to small venues and I had the pleasure of seeing him play here
recently and chat to him after the gig. It was the third time I'd seen
him, but I had forgotten how damn good he is live. I dragged my
flatmate along, she's a young singer studying at the Conservatorium of
Music here and she was blown away. She was that awestruck she went shy
and didn't talk to him when I was chatting with him.

Yea, like anyone can play one of those and sound like Martin Carthy, Nic
Jones, Nick Drake, John Martyn, John Renbourn...

No 'modelling switches' on them are there?

er, that's mostly my point - it's much too difficult to sound good on
    an acoustic.

Does the fact that an instrument is difficult to play well make it less
enjoyable to listen to then - even if played by a virtuoso?

Or are you saying you just don't like any acoustic guitar stuff?

Oh, I like it, but perhaps not enough to go to a show about it.

Fair enough. I admit to preferring it when backing a good singer.

Why the ****? Still, at least there was a proper version there too.

He does play it rather well, doesn't he. Although I'm pretty sure
there was a wrong note at 2:10.

I was playing that just t'other day, as it happens. Now I've seen some
of his fingerings and realised he uses a capo non-standard tuning I
might try it his way, IYSWIM. I've always played it around an
open-fingered A on the 5th fret, optionally leaving the top 'e' open
on the D as well as the A and E chords. Works well on the 12-string.

Still brings a tear to the eye, does that.
