I bought one of these before Xmas.

Also rated 5* in what hifi, and 2010 award winner for budget 40".

It's smashing, and I'd argue why buy something 'fewer' good that's
probably going to sit there for the next decade for the sake of an
    extra £50.

Why would a plasma display have a backlight?

Exactly my thoughts, I'm a bit out of touch with home cinema, but the way
plasma works cant need a backlight.

The thing with Sony is that the budget stuff isnt far off as good as top end
cheaper stuff. I know the gulf has narrowed, but I rate Sony over all TV's.

I saw one of the latst ones the other day & it was setup correctly, it
    looked stunning.

We went to the shop to see it, got the same price TV with the stand £35
cheaper on the 'net, plus (or minus) something like a 15% discount code
and a moneyback deal through quidco. We will have eventually paid
(when the moneyback is verified) around £385 for the bundle delivered
... I couldn't find anywhere else for the same TV at any better price.
And it was and is the best picture quality I've seen on a LED TV so far.

And Currys can't lie to you if you don't talk to them or their salesmen
    ...

I'm really happy with mine. Will be nice when they get freeview HD on
the local transmitter too, as they support that, so I might even dump
    Sky.

I was a Panasonic fan for years, but the LCD's turned out quite poor a few
years ago, so I went nuts & spent £1200 on a Sony 46 incher & it rocks like
    ****.

I have a Sharp 32inch full monty HD as my PC monitor & thats good, we have a
26 inch Samsung in the kitchen & it's ok & at 26inch on sky hd it should
    look much sharper than either...

I watched HD WSBK on Sunday & the Sony looked miles better from a sensible
    distance.

  10. I'm a big fan of the Panasonic plasmas. Only problem is they are power
hungry. If you are going LCD go a Sony. I can see your laptop solution
working with either choice. I'd also go as big as you can afford. A tv
    can never be too big.

I will need a cantilever one as the wall on which the TV will go is the
side wall relative to where we sit.

I'll probably get this, or something similar:

Sony don't do built-in Freesat but Panasonic do.

I'm on my second in 3 years. I've no idea of the power consumption nor do I
    care.

Never mind that, I had the Sat fitter in last night. Now have a Sky dish
feeding my Plasma with Freesat HD. And very nice it is too!

Anyone know if it is worth throwing 129 squids at Sky for a decoder and
their Freesat HD service which has another 3 HD channels and 100odd more
    free to air services.

Pretty knacky that i have to admit but my sofa is directly opposite the
only wall the telly can go on and the other sofa is on the right wall
so it don't need to be angled IYSWIM

    Oh ISWYM.

It would be far cheaper for us to move where the sofa is, but
    apparently that "doesn't work". :eek:/

Depends how you define" worth". Personally I wouldn't give Rupert
Murdoch a penny however good his service is.

See, on this we are almost as one. I wouldn't subscribe to their regular
services, the ones where you pay a subscription to watch the adverts. But
the Freesat HD deal is only 25 or 30 one off squids for a card. An HD + box
can be found on fleabay. So it's really down to whether the content is
    interesting.

I am seriously considering subscribing during the next away Ashes tour -
I am considering setting up a **** offset payment scheme whereby an
organisation that I consider Rupe would find the most odious to his
ideals receives three times my subscription fee.

I used Sky Player during the Ashes. Worked fine, and I could use it at
    work too.
