Andy Bonwick bored us all completely to death with wittery prose along
    the lines of:
If we're in for one-upmanship, try sleeping in a snow hole on the side
    of an avalanche slope.

Mind you, we got out fairly sharpish, when a local told us. :)

  2. Oh yes, too true.

Another good tip is to give the chalet or local office a phone call a
week before you go out, and ask if there's anything they want brought
out from Blighty. Marmite, decent marmalade, latest magazines, etc.

Gets you extra cooked brekky, does that.

Jude and I did three days last week in Kirkwood[1], Tahoe, and were
surprised at how little we did ache, actually. Jude's been doing some
gym work, running (machine) etc., but I've done sod all so should have
    been completely out of shape.

OK, I guess we took it reletively easy, only skiing 4-5 hours per day,
but there were some genuinely challenging double-diamond blacks in
less-than-perfect conditions which should have been hard work, but
didn't seem to hurt us too badly.

Maybe last season's instruction has leapfrogged us both up another
    level or summat...
Course you will - you're gagging for it girl.

    Oh, skiing? Yeah, that too...

[1] Great little place, looking even better this week with fresh
    powder http://www.kirkwood.com/conditions.asp

Err, I suggest you look on a map. North lake is the farthest away bit,
Kirkwood is the closest (and I recommend it, especially if you like
    unpisted steeps and chutes).

To get to the Northern ones you'd need first to cross SF to get to the
Sacramento/Truckee freeway, and traffic around there is a fucking
nightmare. Admittedly, it's freeway most of the way, but that's not
    always an advantage.

We'll be in Banff, followed by Kicking Horse and Panorama, over the
xmyth/new year period, so let's hope the good early snow on the West
    Coast continues :)

No, No, NO. Skiing: it's the only way. Well, or boarding.

I did actually do a summer holiday this year in Italy, and it has to
be said, I took to lounging in the sun like a duck to water! First
real summer holiday in over a decade if you ignore a couple of long
    weekends' camping.

However, given only one major holiday, I'd never sacrifice snow for
    sun. Ever.

  17. Yes - you lose a day at each end due to the effects of the jetlag. I
don't think the US (or Canada) is worth doing for under 10 days.

Depends very much where you go and what you view as 'challenging'. I
was very impressed with my first foray into West-coast US skiing the
other week, at Kirkwood, Tahoe, and would be very surprised if it's
unique. And we're doing two weeks in Canada later this month, where we
know of quite a lot of very challenging stuff, TYVM.

Oh, and the powder's usually much more reliable :)

Well, on the return leg you actually lose a day due to travel, before
the jetlag even becomes a factor.
Aye - the first time we did Canada was for ten days, second time (and
third, this month) we took a whole two weeks to make it more
    worthwhile.
