When I went to La Plagne I thought it was utterly crap. The vertical
difference seems to be about 200m everywhere, meaning that you're
constantly queueing for & taking lifts. This coupled with the obscene
prices charged for everything in the resort (pretty normal for French
Alps though) means I'd give it a miss.
Not relevant to OP but off-piste was good there.

You were doing summat wrong then. There's plenty of vertical there if
you just use the lift system properly. Including at least a couple of
    nice 1000m+ drops.
What, you'll give the whole of the French Alps a miss 'cos they charge
    too much? Well, your loss...

    She did.
Those aren't the first two adjectives that spring to mind when
    thinking of Windy....
Well, if you hate it, don't worry too much. Dry slopes are pretty
rubbish, imo. You'd have been much better off going to the Tamworth
    Snowdome.

One of the great things about skiing/snowboarding is it opens up a
whole new set of shopping opportunities :) I spent 650 quid on new
boots, bindings, jacket and board bag a couple of weeks ago.

Surely that's only for the alleyways in rows of terraced houses? Was
when I were a lad, anyrood.

Steph and I did a couple of snowboarding lessons there. Jolly good fun it
was, but by Christ my legs hurt afterwards. Its not as easy as it
    looks...

I don't agree. True, it may be warmer in the snowdome ;-), but the
basic basics are much easier on a dry slope and the sheffield one even
has a chair lift, IIRC, so there will be much less walking up the
    slope involved.

There are conveyor belts, like you get at airports, only as slow as
fook. i.e. it's quicker to walk, even with skis on. The snowdome is
"limited" at best, I've only skied there for 5 minutes to try some
demo skis from the shop. Even a beginners' beginner would get bored
shitless in an hour. And for the price (£15/hour), if you went for 6
hours per day, for 6 days, it'd be cheaper to go to the Alps for a
    week.

Dunno guv, there's an alleyway between my cul de sac and the next cul
de sac along and it's 'the jitty' to the kids round here.

Yeah, maybe. Dry slopes are purgatory to learn to board on, but
prolly OK for skis, as there's less falling over when learning to ski,
and skiing is generally more technique orientated anyway.
heh. Was my mates shop, so I got a decent discount.

Ahh, my mistake. I was confusing it with the Bracknell one.
Yeah, I know. Been there a couple of times for similar reasons, also
to MK Xscape, which is only slightly better.
Well yeah, but that's not what they're for, is it? FWIW I reckon the
very best thing a novice UK skier can do before getting on real snow
is to take some lessons on an dry slope first, as Nina's proposing.

Ah yes, where the locals let the children play on the snow in the village
and slide into the pile of shit that their rat-like dog has just left.

Can't say that I saw that in Les Arcs or Tignes. It just seemed in Belle
Plagne in particular that it had more than a fair share of shit.

I'd go with you on that, if only to find out where to put the padding.

Of course, when I went, it was no lessons and straight to the top of
    the mountain ...[1]

[1] This statement *may* be coloured slightly by nostalgia/bravado.
