Want to buy a bottle of something really good for the Old Fella for Xmas.

He is a bit of an expert in this scene. I know he likes the "peaty" malts so
might go for a Talisker or similar.

Tesco have some pretty good offers on malts at the moment. I've just picked
myself up a bottle of cask strength Laphroig, which I'm looking forward to
over Christmas. For seriously peaty, Ardbeg seems to be favoured round these
parts - alcoholic peat bog in a bottle.

Lagavulin 16 at a minimum then. You can get older ones, and there are
plenty of decent shops on line. Bought a mate a 1975 Glenmorangie to
celebrate the birth of his son. Forty odd quid IIRC, but bloody hell it
    was good.

    Peaty, stick to Islay malts..

Laphroaig do a 15 yr old (rather than the commonplace 10yr old) for
about 30 sheets, that might be a good choice.

Nah, Jack Daniels Single Barrel. Or, if you really want to push the
    boat out, JD Silver Select.

Nothing like the shite with the black labels.

    JD != Scotch Whiskey.

Try an islands malt for max impact and flavour.

    Talisker or Jura.

    Or smoothies:

    Glenmorangie or Lagavullan

True. I like Jamies better than JD though.

But have you tried Single Barrel or Silver Select, which are "nothing
like the shite with the black labels" ?

I'm just not a fan of rye alcohol. A bad experience with a bottle of
Southern Comfort in my late teens is what I reckon gave me the aversion.

Try plying me with some at a *osm, maybe I'll gat the taste.

That's better, now, wtf are you on about?
