I've given sending by gmail a try, but it substitutes the from address
supplied with the address of the gmail account through which it is being
    sent :-(

The reply address is ok though.

I'll have to see if yahoo mail does the same

    Works for us.
I use spamcop, Pat uses gmail. I'd suggest spamcop. We use Thunderbird
to grab these accounts plus work accounts - all your different
accounts can be laid out neatly in one pane.

No we are not at crossed purposes. *I* sometimes get a delay accessing
motzarella which, on reflection, might be nothing to do with them but the
general pikeyness of my cheap ISP.

  6. I use mail and Usenet on the servers at work; I can ssh or ftp into
one of the central machines from anywhere I can get an internet connexion.
At work I map my central space as a network drive on my PC and can then
run slrn on the PC to access the news-server, using the same auxilliary
files as the Suns, so it's seamless. This has the added benefit that any
Windows-targeting nasties that get past the e-mail defences are absolutely
    useless on the Suns.

Your account will allow you to set and use other addresses, have you tried
    this?

Does it? I'll give it a try.

Unfortunately I'm investigating all this in the odd moments of peace,
but over a 30kb/s link, so finding these options seems to take time.

Why can't any of my folks neighbours have wireless broadband?
    Inconsiderate buggers.

Log in, click on Settings (top right), click on Accounts (2nd "tab"),
click on "Add another email address".
    Disgraceful. I'd complain.

It works, though I got caught out initially with it being case
sensitive; gyp@ and Gyp@ not being the same thing
I did last night, to the one person in the street that's young enough
not to consider computers to be a gimmick that'll never catch on.
Apparently they've not gone wireless as they thought that I'd use it
more than they would. As if?

  11. Email addresses are case-insensitive..

Logins are not - or shouldn't be!
