Son is playing Macbeth in the Guildhall tomorrow night as part of the
'Shakespere in schools' project. He doesn't have an understudy.

He sounded like the Kurgan from Highlander on Sunday night and felt a
bif 'urgh'. He went to school and rehersals yesterday and he seemed
better. He's just been sent home from school, dripping snot, bleary
eyed and the glands in his neck are very swollen. He's crawled into
    bed.

I've put the central heating on, given him paracetemol, Vit C and told
him to drink lots. Any other bright ideas?

Whiskey, honey, lemon and aspirin hot toddy .... packed off to bed with
loads of blankets and hot water bottles to sweat it out. Plenty of
    fluids.

Turn the central heating off, it's only going to help keep the bugs in
    the air.

Best way to shift that kind of thing in my experience is just to sweat
it out. Get him to wear enough layers to be just uncomfortable, and
drink lots of sweet, hot, uncaffienated drinks every couple of hours to
    keep the fluid levels up.

He'll probably still feel shit tomorrow though.

If it's in the first day or two of illness, Tamiflu is yer stuff. If
it's later than that, or it's not a flu virus, it won't make any
difference. Get down your doctor if you think it's worthwhile trying,
and if he agrees that it's flu, _insist_ on it, if you possibly can.
Dunno what UK medics are like these days, but I know the frogs rave
    about the stuff.
Bollocks is it. Just make sure you leave windows open to keep some air
    circulating.
FFS Rob, I always took you for a vaguley sane adult. How, exactly, do
you think that 'sweating it out' like that will help rid the body of
what we must assume to be a cold or flu virus?
For a lot longer, if he takes your advice. If he's running a
temperature it's important to allow the body to cool. Keeping all the
heat in is only going to cause more overheating, which will certainly
make him feel worse in the medium term.

Isn't Tamiflu made by Roche and do you work for Roche?

Well, I suppose if it's good enough to help play with Bird Flu then
it's good enough for the more usual stuff.

Aspirin or ibuprofen (or whatever NSAID) can be taken at the same time
as paracetamol, and both have anti-pyretic properties so will sort him
out if he's got a fever.

Sudafed (can't remember drug name - pseudoephedrine?) works for me as a
decongestant and should help on that front.

www.bnf.org (British National Formulary) is your friend for
    pharmaceutical information.

The virus will be dealt with by the body as best as that body can. A
fit, young person should recover quickly. There is no 'speeding' this
process up you can only deal with the symptoms and the inconvenience
    they cause.

Dehydration is the main problem so you're right about the fluids. A
decent decongestant on the night and plenty of rest before hand is all
    you can do.

    Yeah, what of it?
Well that was what it was developed for. The bird flu scare isn't
hurting sales at the moment, it's true.

Not _quite_ true anymore, but certainly the vast majority of 'flu'
drugs only attack the symptom, not the casue. There's also a case
often argued that some might actually prolong the course of the
illness, but that's not a view to which I subscribe.
Yupp. And don't forget the paracetamol _and_ ibuprofen for the
short-term, plus a bit of caffiene which will act with the
    decongestent by dilating blood vessels.

"or other antiviral" to avoid accusations of spam :). The amount of
snot being produced suggests to me that it's not flu.
I totally agree with you that keeping cool is the right thing to do.
However, increased body temp is part of the body's attack on the
    pathogen.

Quite. Although many conditions start with 'flu-like' symptoms. It
    could be something serious ;-)
Cool, I didn't know that. Every day's a school day.

It's always worked for me when I've felt shit. Perhaps because because
being hot ramps up the metabolism, at the same time upping the fluid
exchange[1] gets rid of a lot of toxins from all the crap I eat and
    drink.

Sure the virus can be with me for days, but after 24 hours I usually
find the worst symptoms are out of the way, my sinuses are clear and
I've stopped sneezing or shivering, then I can get on and do things
    again.

[1] Note, I'm not saying loss here.

I've only got single malt, not wasting that on him. Doubt he'd drink
it, he hasn't acquired the taste for alcohol yet. I might have one
    though.
    Check.
