It would appear there has been an ingress of oil up a wire sleeve
overtime which has flooded the (auto) gearbox ecu on the Buzby
battlebus, sending it into a hissy fit and refusing to change out of
    first gear.

Is is possible to wash them out with cleaner - and if so any
recommendations as to what to use?

We used a giant water based dishwasher when refurbishing electronics
at an industrial scale. Then baked them in an oven to dry.

In this case I'd probably use isopropanol and hope that the oil didn't
contain any metallic compounds that allowed those pesky little
electrons to get to places they shouldn't have...

Landrover Discovery 2's have a similar fault, oil ingress into the
injector wiring loom and/or ECU. The real fix is a new loom ... but
good results are said to be had from flushing using Gunk (an oil
detergent), then Contact Cleaner and a copper (spark plug stylee) brush
on all the wiring and connections.

The affected part of the loom and ecu need to be out really, to do a
    proper job.

We'll see - although I'm going to give the dishwasher a miss as I can't
    split the box.

Swot I figured - I'm going to have at cleaning the ecu up - I think
that part of the loom may be a strightforward swap out. I better grease
up and go see the local merc spares emporium . . . . .

Electrical Contact Cleaner is your friend - get the automotive "safe
on plastic" version. I'd open the ECU and clean it out, though.
