They do, and occasionally you get good deals on them for cashback and
    the like.

Really? Never been to Switzerland then? Or don't you consider it
    Europe?
TBH I've not checked in recent years, but I'd be surprised even if the
French ones down here did, let alone the Swiss or German ones.

HBOS recently did the same. When my Gold VISA card expired it was replaced
    with a Mastercard. Same T&Cs.
IME, yes. I have used an Egg Mastercard all over Europe without issue. It
has low overseas charges and gives a useful cashback.

As Colin says, you could change provider. There are usually some good
incentives if you shop around. I got a CapitalOne card that gave 4%
cashback for the first 3 months. As I was buying a laptop for my lad and
renewing some insurance policies during that period, it was a decent
amount. Seems they still have the offer running.

    Sainsbury's accept Amex.

Trot. My Amex costs me nothing. There's no annual fee, and I have no idea
what the interest rate is, as it's paid off each month. I use it for
about 90% of my purchases, although there are indeed many places that
don't accept them due to the higher cut that they take from the merchant.

Those fuckers that pass on the charge to the customer, also adjust
accordingly for Amex. A recent example was a holiday company charging 1%
for Visa/MC and 2.5% for Amex.

Something not mentioned yet, is that a UK issued Amex, when used abroad,
will have purchases converted in to US$ and then converted into pounds.
I've never used it abroad for that reason, cynically believing that the
exchange rates will do me no favours.

  9. Well - as I said before my exposure was 5+ years ago and things may
    have changed in the meantime.
Which kind of destroys your argument.
Most of the people that I spoke to don't pass a regular CC charge onto
their customers but do pass the Amex overhead on. Which is reasonable
    in my view.

No. I'm merely contradicting your statement that they are "not widely
used in the UK". 90% seems pretty widely used to me.

have you had the CapitalOne card that I mentioned above? 4% for 3 months,
then 1% after that (no upper limit). It's a Mastercard so accepted more
    widely than your Amex.

Stoozing's getting harder. The balance transfer fee eats into the profit
and the lenders are tightening things up quite a bit. Credit limits are
tumbling (where it used to be a doddle to get, say, 10 grand, they'll
now offer half that) and some are limiting balance transfers (eg.
Barclaycard at just over £5k). It's still possible, but I'll be bailing
out when my current set of 0% deals end in December. Not worth the
    effort for the paltry returns.

I've got a 0% on new purchases for 6 months with 15k limit on MBNA at
the moment. I fully expect to max it out over the next month then leave
the cash to repay it sat in my offset mortgage account 'til the deal
    ends.

The balance transfers are still worth it if you've got an offset, but
possibly not worth the hassle if you only get savings account net
    interest out of it.

I've got it all sitting in a number of ISAs, and I've just been moving
the same balance from card to card for the last few years. I've now had
to start splitting the balance across multiple cards (no additional
cost, but a bit more arse-ache) because of the policies card issuers are
    starting to put in place.

I ditched my Natwest cards for the Lloyds TSB Airmiles Duo thing
    (Natwest dropped airmiles).

I only use the Amex for fuel, as it's always over ?50 and racks up more
miles. For normal purchases I use the mastercard.
