OT Firewire problem

Discussion in 'UK Motorcycles' started by Mungo \two sheds\ Toadfoot, Aug 31, 2005.

  1. I've posted this in uk.comp.misc but I know there's a lot of clever buggers
here and this group's busier anyway...

I got myself a firewire card and have slotted it into the pc, which has
recognised it. XP didn't make a song and dance about it like it usually does
("'ERE! YOU'LL NEVER GUESS WOT I FOUND IN YOUR PC!?"), the card has just
    appeared in the device manager.

I've plugged in the cable which came with the card, one big end, t'other
    small,
and plugged the other end into my DV camcorder but that's as far as it
goes - the camcorder isn't "seen" and doesn't appear in Movie Maker; just my
    webcam as before.

I noticed that the card has two large external sockets, one internal large
socket, and one small external (4 pin) socket. The camcorder has a 4 pin
output so do I need a 4 pin to 4 pin cable or is there something I've not
    done?

You can connect it to any of the 6/4 pin connectors, the other 2 pins
    just provide power.

Although XP detected the card was there any drivers with it. It may
require the manufacturers drivers rather than the built in ones.

You will *probably* need the drivers for the *camera*

  5. A fair point, and no, no driver.

    *Furkle furkle*

There aren't any on Safecom's website - seems it doesn't need anything
    special.

  7. Oh don't say that!

"The system may not work properly depending on the pc or capture board you
    are using".

    Fucking ta, JVC.

I think it's the cable. It's definitely the cable. Someone email me a cable.
Please let it be the cable; I'm fed up with it now.

  8. Yers, sort of.

"When using a DV cable, be sure to use the optional JVC cable......"

    Hmmm.

As in checking to see if there is a setting on the cam to allow DV out
    rather than input etc.

  11. Yeah, I knew you meant that, sorry; I was sidetracked by the Manuel (olé).
There aren't any special settings for DV out apart from plugging the cable
into the pc first, then into the camera.

I wonder if it would like rebooting without the camera being plugged in?
    Back in a min.

    Si

P.S. Just read your other post. Saved the site, unplugged camera, rebooting
    in 5...4...3

Why? Surely there was a disc with it?
I doubt they are talking about firewire
Why do you think it's the cable?

  13. Nope. Mined ewe, I did have to go and check to make sure I wasn't being
    thick.
No, probably not, but I have to blame *someone*.
I've had a furkle around the 'net and found people who've had the same
problem. All sorts of fixes have been suggested but it's often been the
cable which was at fault. Also the chap I bought it from (Ebay, but a shop)
has now said it might be the cable.

OK. Have you tried turning everything off. Plugging the camera into the
PC. Turning the camera on, and then starting the PC? I have a client with
a camera that only works if you do everything exactly that way.

doesn't work I may have to start stamping my feet.

Thanks to all for the suggestions.

Catman? He'z just ziz guy, you know?
Can't see that. I've just plugged my DV camcorder into the firewire
port, XP goes "bingly bing!" and pops up a dialog asking me how do I
    wish to save the video?

Haven't installed any video software yet.

  19. No, I haven't got any other suitable devices. My laptop's got firewire built
in but, as you'd expect, my cable has the wrong size plug on one end.

  20. I bought a Firewire card and cable of that eBay. It worked once and
never again. After trying everything including removing SP2 I finally
got annoyed enough to go to PC world and buy another one at about 5
times the price. It's worked perfectly since.
