Firefox updated (automatically, I hate that) and now I'm getting
'problem loading page' for everything I try. I'm using XP which
updated yesterday but everything was working fine up until a few
minutes ago when I opened the browser and it updated.

My net connection is fine, I've got news and email, firefox is ticked
as allowed in the firewall settings - what next? Of course my usual
solution of googling for the answer doesn't sodding work without
    access to google.

In keeping with UKRM tradition: Chrome.

don't you have Internet Explorer lurking in the background?

I suggest you delete FF from add/remove programs and do a fresh install

BTW, my FF updated last night and it is fine, v3.6.6
