Umm, why do you need a tv decoder to plug in a camcorder? I just run an
IEE cable from the socket on my dv cam to the firewire socket on my
PC, and use my usual video capture software to do the rest.

Had a quick hunt but didn't find one that does everything on the list,
I'll keep a eye out next time I'm down at one of the computer mauls
    round here.

I found a few Firwire TV tuner boxes with video capture but not digital
TV, it may be better to wait until the new crop of HDTV PCI capture
cards get shoved into little plastic boxes.

That only works if you have a digital camcorder

When I took out the suspended floor in the dining room of our first house, I
used all the old floorboards and joists to make a bench for the garden. I
had to buy a dozen coach bolts to hold the ends together, but the rest of it
was held together with cut nails I'd salvaged from the old floor - hammered
straight, of course. This was about 14 years ago, and the bench is still
just about hanging together - which is not bad for a morning's work and a
load of scrap timber. Plus, I got the proportions spot on, so it's actually
very comfortable - more than you can say for most garden furniture. I must
measure it up and draw plans someday, before it falls to bits.

Personally I don't have one at all, unless you live in LA the chances of
you having many, if any, friends or loved ones me or anyone else would
want to see on the telly, is slim to nill. I think it's unkind the way
people force all and sundry to sit through tedious hours of their
hideously ugly brats 21st birthdays or weddings, I don't intend to
inflict my gargoyle self or my friends on any one so don't have one.

I'll probably get one if and when I have sprogs so I can film the little
turds embarrassing the hell out of them selves and use the footage to
bribe my way into a better retirement home, preferably one where the
    staff don't bugger the inmates.

This message was brought to you by my cheerful and sunny disposition, oh
    and beer, night all.

I don't know if this is still the case but a while back when I was
researching camcorders for a mate, it turned out that, for the same
money as a high quality analogue camera with all the knobs and switches
and a good lens, you could get a shit digital one.

I told him to get a good analogue camcorder and a good TV tuner /
capture card for his PC, the whole thing worked out at about the same
price as a low end digital but he got TV on his computer, he was quite
    chuffed.

Heh, I know what you mean, I'm waiting for so much stuff like,

    1. ESS to make a processor for DVD players that supports DIVX with Qpel
and GMC and maybe even simultaneous MPEG4 recording to hard drive from a
    digital tuner. [1]

    2. Reasonably inexpensive VGA 30 frame per second firewire or USB2
    webcam [2].

    3. Promise to make a native SATA chip.

    4. Seagate to make native SATA hard drives.

    5. The price of dual layer media to drop from GBP 6.86 to below 1.50.

    6. Manufacturers to produce a floppy bay mountable USB2 hub with at
    least 2 transaction translators.

The list goes on and on and on trust me, anyone got a few million they
want to invest in starting a computer peripherals manufacturer, I've got
    some great ideas? ;-)

[1] I'd also like the player to have an NIC so it can play mp3s and
video files off my hard drive, a bit like
    http://www.neuston.com/en/mc500.asp
but with recording. The curent ESS chip can decode DIVX without Qpel and
GMC while recording to hard drive in MPEG2 which is dam cool and if
someone puts a digital tuner in it I'll probably get it anyway.

A Sony digital8 camcorder with firewire is almost as cheap as a Hi8
camcorder, plus you casn use it with your computer and play Hi8 too.
