Lots of generic drugs are, ask at the counter instead of looking on the
    shelves for brand name stuff.

Because they stopped innovating about fifteen years ago when the
accountants took over the company and went downmarket while still
    trading on their former reputation?

Where are my notes from O.U. B820 TMA02?

    ITYM experience.

Having sold more tellys than most have had hot dinners, I'm pretty good
    at choosing sets.

For a given size, Sony make 3 grades of telly; Bloody Good, OK, Pikey.

Bloody Good is as good as Sony ever were.
OK is simply OK, but not as good,
Pikey is corner cut internally and won't last as long as the other 2.

A lot of folk buy Sony Pikey or OK grades thinking they're buying Sony
quality (which, as you say, is Sony trading on their good name), but
when the telly doesn't last as long as the customer thinks it should,
Sony will reap the non-benefits of making Pikey-grade sets and will lose
sales in the long run, imo.

At about the same time that you stopped snipping, one assumes.

What is it with all the extra blank lines being inserted within quoted
    material all of a sudden?

Ok, the important question - how can you tell which is which?

S'interesting. I had a Sony 32" widescreen TV 8 years ago (when they were
approx £1400), and it was flawless for the three years until I sold it when
I went to Uni. My dad bought a new Sony 32" widescreen TV[1] last year, and
the power switch has failed three times in under 18 months on two different
    units.[2]

Got any recommendations for a good model? At least 32", widescreen,
    sub-£1200.

[1] Annoyingly, the very one I was looking at getting.
[2] So perhaps not quite so annoying for me, as I won't be getting it!

Last time I looked into this was a couple of years ago and I don't have

    I didn't, they're a bit cheaper out here.
It's worse than that in a way, we don't have a TV tuner at the moment so
if it's not on dvd or the interweb I'm screwed [1] but in terms of price
per inch of screen beemers leaves all the plasma/LCD/CRT TVs [2] in the
dust. If you're not interested in HDTV and just want DVDs and current TV
then you can get projectors for around 500 quid in native 800 x 600.
Not sure if I agree with that, it's brought me a lot of viewing
pleasure, things are *so* much more engaging on the big screen, 24
season 2 almost gave me and the girlfriend hart attacks. Also computer
games where your shooting life size opponents or racing life size cars
past life size trees using a life size steering wheel and pedals are
    *much* more fun.

[1] though I'm told Hong Kong has *dire* TV anyway
[2] as in not CRT projectors, if you look around and take your time you
can get fabulous deals on second hand CRT projectors.
