My TV has expired with a quite loud pop and is now making squeaking noises
    (literally).

Do people still repair TVs? Or is it a case of throw it away and buy another
    one?

Yes - look in the yellow pages.
Depends on the TV - if its a good make - try fixing.
If its a generic POS TV.... up to you...

I got my ancient Pornosonic fixed for £60 - as opposed to £150+ for a
new TV with a worse spec.

A similar thing happened to me last year. The concensus of opinion on
here was buy a new one. And as you can get new ones now for not a lot
of cash really - unless you want wide-screen digi or even posher -
don't bother with getting it repaired.

    It's a Beko [1] - a new one is about £200 I think.

It's only 2.5 years old so a bit annoyed it's blown up.

    Ta though.

[1] yes yes - looked inside and all the parts say "Phillips" :)

Look around for offers - I was tempted by a Samsung widescreen jobbie
for lots of dosh (well, over ?300) and bought a standard size one
instead for half the price. The only downside is it doesn't have
speed-text, but the quality of the picture is good and it has a host of
other features that means (if you remember to) you can set it to turn
itself off. Saves waking up about 4am with the TV blaring out at you
   )

Do they? The last time I looked inside a TV they had strange bulbous
    things inside that glowed.

Cheap crap produced in a Turkish sweat-shop.
Par for the course for one of them, I'm afraid.
(Same is true for any of the rebadged 'Beko' products - Bush, Naiko,
Alba, Goodmans, Wharfedale, low-end Hitachi and as you've found below,
    Philips)
Beko have a massive operation in Turkey, they make generic cheap crap
which gets badged up by all the budget brands, and also as the low-end
models from more respectable brands, too.

IMHO, you'd be better off binning it and buying something decent -
Panasonic are my favourites. Shame all the Granada / Box Clever shops
closed down as their year-old ex-rental sets were often sold at silly
prices. (I paid £300 for an 18 month old 32" Panasonic Widescreen with
100Hz tube, Dolby pro-logic with subwoofer, pic in pic etc at a time the
new equivalent was selling at over £900).

There's your problem, you've got a cheap Taiwanese copy.

    It should say "Philips".

My Hitachi widescreen thingy needed a new power supply bit - £75 instead
    of £300 odd.

Rip it open and do it your self, if you can't fix it or you make it
worse you've lost nothing. If you do have to replace it get a beemer,
    they rock.

    I got one of these
    http://asia.optoma.com/Products/Product_Detail.aspx?ID=5&Type=Spec&Category=HProjector
a year ago and I still marvle at the quality, it's unbelevable and I'm
just chucking it at the wall at the moment because I can't find a 100”
screen I like, I'll probably end up painting a screen directly onto the
wall. Personaly I'd wait for the native HDTV DLP chips to get cheeper
    and go for this
    http://asia.optoma.com/Products/Product_Detail.aspx?ID=8&Type=Spec&Category=HProjector
but you'll probably have to wait at least a year befor they get sub 2000
    squid.

And what stops this television breaking any sooner than the one with a
different name on the front but the same bits inside?

  15. well I wouldn't spend that sort of money on a telly but I don't think
amputation needs to be comparative experience.

Thanks Paul - I just wasn't grasping that logic.

Goodness knows what the arguments would be if generic drugs were ever
    released over here...

    It was for dramatic effect.

I'm getting more and more like my father each day (in terms of money, not
    amputation).

You buy a Panasonic that's built in Japan, not a cheap one knocked up in
    Turkey.
