That looks ok, but the Axis doesn't need a PC to work with.

Neither does the Pheenet jobby. I heard though, that the Axis cams
don't like working with NAT though. I'm not sure if this is true.

Heh, well as I said I am interested. Since you're au fait with all this
would you price up a basic setup for one infra red camera (presumably one
that works in normal light as well). If you prefer you can email me at (my
    name@ my name .biz).

  9. Network Address Translation - as done by most firewalls so that you can
have a private non-routable IP network inside but all external traffic
is translated to have a real Internet IP address (and untranslated on
the way back in of course).

It was what stopped us running out of Internet IP addresses in the late
    90's.

Ok, just before you take this subthread down the route of no return with
your nerd buddies, what does that exactly mean in human terms?

    Allow me, I'm practicing being a non-techie.

There are some IP addresses designated as "private" that are designed to
be used for networks that don't directly talk over the internet.

There are also a number of "public" addresses that are used on the
Internet. The problem is that public addresses are pretty thin on the
ground now because nobody planned ahead well enough when TCP/IP (The
protocol machines on the internet talk to each other using) was
invented. You could say the present situation is a little bit like when
they had to change lots of phone numbers a few years back because some
cities were running out of numbers.

NAT hides one range of IP addresses (in the case of a home user the
Private ones) behind a different address, or addresses - much like
putting call forwarding on a phone.

....how's that for explaining it in human terms?

They're Linux devices, that, with the proper port forwarding on the
    router, do NAT ok.

You've been well looked after, I see.

It's like a block of flats, called "Nelson Mandela House" and all the
individual flats inside this block have numbers.

So outside, I see "Nelson Mandela House", but I really don't care about
the flats inside. If I was a postman, it would be akin to me delivering
to the big postbox at the entrance of the block and the people in each
of their flats sorting out their own mail.

    Any clearer?

You don't understand. I don't give a **** I just want to know whether it
emails pictures. Nelson can look after his own security.

It's got about as much to do with e-mail as a postman's socks have to do
    with the letters arriving.

When I was running CDshop.com, some daft bint in Essex ordered
105 videos from me one day.

It turned out she'd reported 2 of her chequebooks stolen, then
gone on a spending spree with them. She'd spent about a grand
with me and IIRC about 100 grand overall.

It was the perfect crime, except for one vital flaw which was to
    be her downfall.

In order to receive the goods, she had to give her name and
    address.

The nice judge gave her 18 months to think about it.

<G> Don't. Porl will want that bit explained. Especially if you say
that it depends upon the sock colour. :)

Heh. There are a lot of cameras on the market. However, your standard
webcam will work fairly well. There's loads of s/w that will either
email pictures or ftp them somewhere for you to download them later.

If you're a computer nerd, you can make this more complicated (to
understand, not work), by getting a camera that doesn't need to be
    connected to a PC.
