Quite the crappiest bike mag ever produced and not even much use as
    firelighters.

Given some of today's offerings, that's almost impressive.

My MCS&L subscription is due for renewal. Not sure I am going to bother.

I have browsed the web site a bit. The problem is that I am still
moderately interested in some modern machinery. The only modern bike I
stumbled across in a report on RC was the Morini Corsaro 1200, and a
mate of mine wrote that anyway.

Quite enjoyable reading Minton's musings about Laverdas and the like,
but what does he make of say a KTM950SM. Too long in the tooth now I
    suppose.

Oh for the modern equivalents of Aspel and Setright[1].

[1] Just dug out MCS from Jan '77. "Yams with Pomegranates" : LJKS in
    Marrakesh on the XS750 et.al.

  7. I subscribe to RC. (1) It's very cheap. (2) I enjoy parts of it
immensely. I loathe other parts of it in equal measure, mind. But it
    still gets my dosh.

    MCS&L is an arse-wipe, IMHO.

  8. Is that the classic write-up where, in a lovely veiled reference to the
amount of recreational drugs available on the laucnch he referrred to
some of the journalists having developed pinhole retinas, presumably to
    aid navigation?

I do buy other mags from time to time, mostly PB. I was slightly iffy about
subscribing to RC, as I remarked to Rowena at one of the shows, as I
subscribed to MotoRetro and it went down the tubes after 18 munce, and I
didn't want to inflict the same fate on RC.
I think Minton wishes he filled that role, but he hasn't the command of
    English to do so.

It wouldn't be the first time. I wrote in to them just last year IIRC
(you won't find it hard to guess the subjest). The beauty of MCS in "the
good old days" was that the letters pages[1] were a sort of very long
drawn out, but gentlemanly, version of UKRM in many ways.

The Jan '77 issue features a letter of from "Idi Amin".

Morphing already in vogue in 1977. Nothing new under the sun eh?

  16. So true. So very true.

Long discussions over the merits (or otherwise) of MZs.

Letters a whole page long, dissecting the technical aspects of Japanese
    footrest mounts.

Explanations of how Vincents got there before the Japs.

  18. I sometimes read that and occasionally enjoyed it, but one thing I found
most peculiar was the habit of article writers of not naming themselves,
just initials. Probably the same auld buggers who wrote stuff for the
amateur radio publications of the late 50s.
