    catman scribbled:
When I need to use them, I'll let you know.

In the initial process, considering the fact they've supposedly been
inundated with a lot more applications than they geared up for, the
delays waiting in phone queues have been minimal for me (like 5 mins)

Do they have their own NNTP servers... couldn't see anything about it on
    the website?

catman banged the rocks together and they said :
I had cause to use them today.

Need my line speed capped at the exchange (I'm on the end of a very
long line and it is far too enthusiastic in its initial connection
speed resulting in the connection deteriorating over 12~36 hours to
    completely crap).

So, after finding the tech support phone number ( 08705 515 515 ) and
going through a couple of levels of automated waffle, phone rang and
    answered in under 30 seconds.

Bloke seemed reasonably competent and wasn't reading from a screen
flowchart. He said there was a higher level tech team (which aren't
support, they sort things out), made notes on my account for them,
explained that in the first 2 weeks of a new ADSL2+ connection they
monitor the error rates and progressively cap the line speed so it
drops to a sensible, reliable level.

And a few hours later the line dropped and came back up a couple of
times, connecting at under 2500kbps now.

So, all in all, I'd rate their tech support as good.

As to the line, I'll see if it deteriorates and needs capped more over
    the next week.

Does the + box actually require that you have a telephone line
connected in order to function properly?

Similarly, does anyone know if the Sky Multi-Room, which says you must
have it connected, will work correctly if you don't?

Sky's T&Cs say that you have to have one connected. Whether unplugging
it means that the + box stops working, I don't know.
    Pass. Next question.

  11. It doesn't stop working - except that you can't do any PPV stuff as the
box has no other backchannel to tell Sky to charge you for what you
    want to watch.

Other than that it appears to have no function.

cant speak for sky+ but for the standard box they send you snotty
letters threatening to cut your viewing off unless you connect it.

I think this continues after the year as we've been in this house for
over that period and still get letters from them when it drops out.

Really? My previous, standard box was unplugged pretty much as soon as
the year ran out (around 1996) and I never received anything.

IIRC you have to pay more for the subscription if you don't have it
    connected.

Although it does complain on boot if it's not plugged into a phone line IME.

I've never heard of that. And I only ever paid standard fees. Maybe I
just got away with it. *shrug*

The new HD box is connected now, anyhoo, and will remain that way until
    the 12 months are up.

I guess that's only if you have bought the thing on their standard
contract, i.e. that includes the box, dish and installation at a very
much reduced rate. Clearly, we don't have ours connected and we never
got any snotty letters, even when they had a valid address (your old
    one) for us.

The question is, can you get sky+ or multi-room on a similar
    non-contract basis?
