OT customs grumble

Discussion in 'UK Motorcycles' started by Work in progress, Dec 20, 2006.

  1. I ordered a couple of geeky web comic related T shirts from the states
as presents. [1] Total cost just over 40 dollars so around 20 pounds
at the current exchange rate. As it was such a small amount I didn't
bother getting one of my USA contacts to send it through as a gift.

I've got a card through the door saying I have to pay £9 customs
charge before I can pick them up. It's a small amount but a sodding
big percentage of the total cost. And it means I have to go to the
scrum that is the post office collections office. Today I am mostly
    another pissed off citizen.

[1] well, one of them is for me "I'm true neutral, I go both ways"

  2. It's £2 plus the cost of freight over your personal import limit.
It is indeed. Some of the carriers - UPS are one, iirc have a much
smaller charge for personal receivers vs commerical ones, as it is
actually the forwarding company who make the customs entry, therefore
need re-imbursing for their time etc. The post office, I believe do
    not.

    Sorry!

Send back the card stating the items were samples for your buisiness

  4. I try and avoid the lying thing. So nice idea, but no.

Actually I can't remember the last time I lied as opposed [1] to
    withheld the truth.

[1] oposed isn't really the correct word there, it will have to do.

  5. Not a clever idea. It might work, sometimes, but ultimately will end up
causing problems. Particularly if you don't have a registered business
    in the first place.

Anyhow, Customs officers first question will be "did you pay for these,
as per the amount stated on the package/invoice?" if you answer yes,
they are not therefore samples. If you answer no, you land the shipper
in a heap of dung, for misdeclaring the shipment. At which point,
they'll defend themselves proving that you did pay and lied to Customs.

They can buy *a lot* of full-length (to the shoulder) rubber gloves for £9 -
and you *know* what customs inspectors do with them...

  11. Why avoid lying? Personal choice based on an evolving ethical and
    philosophical position.
Yes, It's rare I do and usually because I'm keeping someone else's
    secret.
Ta. Though then 'withholding' would be needed.

    I haven't even fucking started.

I lay off for a little while and UKRM becomes "how much is my little
    house on the prairie worth"

Honestly - ring a bell and retards come running. Where's the humour,
where's the whatever made UKRM intelligent.

    ukrm intelligent?[1]

[1] I am sure there is some law somewhere about the gross intelligence
of any given group of people being less than the sum of it's parts and
in the case of bikers, considerable so.
