Art (especially visual art) is IMO massively over-rated. It's just
pretty pictures, and should be considered as nothing more. The likes
    of Rothko aren't even that.

I see photo-realistic painting as the highest, purest form, to which
    all artists should aspire.

    Who was dismissing art?
Quite right. But are you dismissing mathematics and science?
Exactly the opposite. Compare two high streets: do you really they
look almost identical because of the left?

ICBA to google, but I am sure I could find a couple of examples that
    don't.

True, capitalism leads to its own uniformity, however, I would submit
that the uniformity of style is more subject to dynamic change than it
would be under the cold hand of the extreme left.

Anyway, I was only presenting a perfect dry fly to an eager riser. I can
tell from your posting history you don't fall in to the Pol Pot camp.

    I don't.
    But only a couple.
Depends on what you mean by the `extreme left': the Sixties explosion
of noncomformity happened in a country with nationalized rail, coal,
    oil, travel agents and steel.

    I realise that.
Depends what you mean by "almost".
Heh, I was there - so I am supposed not to remember it. Not a one party
    state IIRC.

Go to a lot of the smaller Russian cities and tell me they look almost
identical because of some kind of western influence.

So the `free market' leads to economic stagnation and identical high
streets, making it better than Russia?

The Russians seem to think the free market is better than the way they
had it before so who am I to argue?

If you want something photo-realistic, take a fucking photo.

Yeah, and some here still wish we had thatcher in charge but you
should always disregard the 1% who are unable to learn from history.

I don't dismiss it entirely, I just refuse to read into it anything
    which patently isn't there.

Except in Russia he still seems to have quite a huge following. Despite
a fairly cutting 50odd million across the "Classes". Which I find odd
    indeed.

Think about what has happened to Russia since the collapse of
Stalinism: falling life expectancy, worsening health, increasing
costs, shrinking population, loss of prestige (until
recently). Russians in general were better off under Stalinism, if not
under Stalin, they stuffed Hitler, and now they're nostalgic for the
man who made it all happen.

  20. I have just sat through a presentation which told me that the Russian
male life expectancy is only 55. Incredible.

If I were Russian, I suppose I'd be The Geriatric Gentleman.
