SWMBO apparently used to have 14, but that was in her previous
existence. She makes do now with covering the walls of the downstairs
    loo with cat pictures.

I used to have a Manx rumpy in my previous existence. An interesting
little beast, which was undoubtedly being fed by at least one other
household. A great tree climber, but either thick (for a cat) or an
attention seeker. Despite having a way of getting back in to the house
after being out on the tiles (to no end as she was 'seen to') it would
'forget' and climb up on to a porch roof just below the bedroom window
in the early hours to wail pitifully until I went down and opened the
    door.

    <raises eyebrows>

    Condolences.
Give yourself a week or two and start looking for a replacement kitty.
    Life goes on.

Fair point. I wasn't thinking that 'belong'.

Now how do you feel that applies to abused cats that have been stray as
kittens then domesticated? Have they already been kittenised for life,
    as it were?

    How does it work?

Morphine is used as an antimotility medicine when used for diarrhoea. It
relaxes the muscles of the intestine, reducing their activity. This slows
the passage of food through the gut, allowing more time for water to be
absorbed from the food residue. This reduces the fluidity of faeces and the
frequency of bowel movements. Morphine also eases painful muscle
contractions and prevents spasm in the gut.

Kaolin is an adsorbent medicine used to treat diarrhoea. It has the ability
to adsorb some of the bacterial toxins that often cause diarrhoea.

Nope. Imodium (loperamide) works in exactly the same way as morphine,
binding to opiod receptors, the effcet of which is to reduce the
contractions of the intestinal wall and slow down digestive transit.

Never really given it that much thought, TBH, although I'd certainly
agree that there may be points of no return. Taking an adult feral
cat, for instance, into a domestic environment would be an almost
    certain failure.

Our black kitten came as a semi-feral farm cat at 7 months old.
After a year she has just about settled in but rarely leaves the house
even though the back door is open during most of daylight.
She will come for a cuddle on her own terms but runs if approached.
