In all seriousness, I do *not* think our cat is in any way imbued with
human like characteristics [1]. He's definitely stupid. But we don't
'own' him in any way. I could force him to stay, in the same way I could
force my wife to stay in the house if I chose to[2] but I don't own her,
either.

AFAIAC I satisfy the cat's basic requirements[3]. Why *wouldn't* he
bugger off somewhere else if that ceased to be the case?

[1] Apart from something that seems to equate to selfishness.
[2] Not legally, I grant.
[3] Food, warmth, shelter, water etc.

You're ignoring the family relationships that are formed. Not quite
like a dog pack, but we keep our cats in a kitten-like state for their
entire lives and become surrogate mothers to them, so they do, in a
very real sense, 'belong' to us.
