if you were thinking of buying a new car, is it better or worse (in
terms of resell value later) to buy a "special edition" over the base
    model?

    I'm looking at a Citroen C2 1.4i Furio. With the "cashback deal"[1]
these come in about 7250 quid on the road. For an extra 200 quid, I
can choose either the "Sensodrive" upgrade or the "Ministry of Sound"
    special edition.

Over the basic Furio, the 200 quid gets you a body kit & spoiler, a
much uprated stereo system (including an MP3 compatible CD player),
more sporty seats, leather steering wheel, aluminium door sill inserts
and the naff MoS logo on the CD holder.

Any comments (other than the insanity of buying a new Citroen)?

[1] the word they are really looking for is "discount".
[2] this is what they call on Top Gear a "flappy paddle"
semi-automatic gear shift - don't fancy it, really.

First, why would you indeed, really
Second, at the catastrophic rate it will depreciate it's a moot point
Third, a special edition will hold the extra value better than a basic model
    with optional extras added

No difference really, the 'special editions' are just base models with
some bits added to make them sound good.
You've lost me there already, it's a Citroen.
Whatever gets you going I suppose.
Yes, don't buy a Citroen, they're crap (there aren't any other
    comments!)
Definitely not, nobody has one of these that is reliable.

I've been seriously considering one of those. I'm after the 16 VTS
model. Mainly because they're doing it with a years free insurance.

Not test driven yet but read plenty of reviews and the main thing that
comes out is the Sensodrive is shite. Far too slow and slows the car
    down a lot as well.

Don't tell us... Next you'll be taking your chickwheels to cruises (or
the local supermarket carpark), and hanging out wid da yoofs to listen
    to choonz, innit?

Sad what people will do to try and recapture being young.

  7. Normally a perts bin special. Or to shift something that isn't selling.
Don't touch Sensodrive. AHA I see it's a non diesel model they are trying
to shift. I bet the offer dowsn't cover the diesel variant?
    Are you are 21 again.
Buy the diesel it's resail value will be much better on a Citroen.
    Shite I've heard.

darsy emerged from their own little world to say
The extras you are talking about won't affect the resale value. It will
be valued as a Furio. 200 quids worth of tat will have less impact than
what colour you choose or whether the car has good tyres at resale. When
I worked for a Fiat dealer we would always bid more on a part-ex in a
good colour like red or black. Even plod has cottoned onto this by using
    silver cars.

Are the extras worth £200 to you/her for the duration that you will own
the car? That's the only question you have to answer.

No. Ask simonk. IIRC, his Xsara went from £10k to £3-4k is 3 years. What
happened to the getting a decent slightly used car that won't depreciate
like a brick. That citroen will be worth what, £3-4k tops in 3 years. And
from what you've said, this is a stop gap car until you get a bigger
    house/garage.

What happened to the Audi A2 idea? £8k will get you a 2 yr old 1.4 A2, but
I presume you knew that already.

Generally regarded as a waste of money, I'm led to believe.
Depends on whether you want a flappy-paddle gear change, or a flash-ish
    stereo.
If I don't get this new job (complete with Impreza WRX-sized car allowance)
I'm considering getting a GT or VTR.

They depreciate like hell, but then they're often discounted heavily from
new in the first place. Mine's been pretty bulletproof for the last 5
years, and while it's not worth much now, I don't feel particularly cheated.
It pretty much did the job as "cheapest available medium hatchback with ABS
    and aircon"

  11. They'd have to pay me more than that.

You want to buy a nice little Seat Ibiza. Mine was a mere 13000 euros.
Gutless as ****, but at least it hasn't got a body kit and a spoiler.

Been out on the RGV yet?

That's a very strong argument for buying a 3-4 year old Xsara VTS, you
    know.

the huge pressing issue is that Citroen are the only mugs prepared to
give me a decent trade-in value on the Jeep.

The difference being that with a discount it's still difficult for poor
people to get the deposit together for the finance, but with a cash back
they magically have enough deposit for the 3 year finance scheme where
they have to find a lump sum to buy the car but they can't afford it as
they've just been shelling out for a car for 3 years so they have to buy
another new one over 3 years on the same scheme as it's the only way to
stay mobile and they don't want to hand back their 3 year old car
without getting another. Or something like that.

    Oh, and save your £200

Dunno - pig sick of having to drive around the block 4 or 5 times
trying to find a space to fit the jeep, so want something that'll fit
    in the garage.
good point. I was just curious.
    that was my gut feeling.

heh. Like I said to someone else, they're offering a *lot* more as a
trade-in on the Jeep than anyone else, so it's still tempting despite
    the inherant crapness of Citroens...

yeah, but to me, it's not "hot" enough to be bothered with the very
large extra cost over the 1.4i model.
there's no way I'd want the Sensodrive.

If I do buy one, it'll almost certainly be black.
probably "yes" - I'm not bothered about the spoiler etc. but the
upgraded sound system is important to me.
