I'm looking for a solid state camcorder that has image stabilisation,
    something like this:-
    http://cgi.ebay.co.uk/ws/eBayISAPI.dll?ViewItem&rd=1&item=280069269052
but I need the IS to work on the video input.

Long shot but does anyone know one that does IS on video in?

Also do these type of camcorders let you set them to cyclic recording
mode? That is they will record permanently, keeping say 2 hours on the
SD card and overwriting old video to record new.

    TIA

Do you mean IS on the S-video/AV-In etc. input?

I don't think anyone makes anything like that. Inputs are usually used
for mastering to the cam, and mastering doesn't require any sort of
    stabilising.

Can you give an example of what you want to shoot to see if there are
    other options?

Veggie Dave banged the rocks together and they said :
"Black box" under seat connected to bullet cam on bike or in car,
"black box" on top of machinery connected to bullet cam pointed at
    "intermittent problem area" of machine.

I suppose post-production software can do IS now, but I'd like it to be
    done on the recording device.

Silly really, I've a good idea how software IS works and there's no
reason it couldn't be made to work on the video input very easily.
Nah, its only a cheapo setup we're looking for, to catch a fault with a
machine that isn't showing up in the trace logs. When we know what its
physically doing we will know which bits need changing.

Also want to use in in car and on bike.

I think a cheapo solution and post-processing where needed will do.

Except I can't think of why anyone would need it - you being the
    exception.
Just cable tie a pen lens to the machine and keep the cam separate and
vibration free. You should be able to get a really good quality image
    pretty easily.

I wouldn't think for a second I'm the first person to want to split the
camera and recording device, cause I'm not.

Wanting IS thrown into the bundle too, isn't too much to ask.

I suspect there's MPEG4/2/DVD recorder lump that does IS, but it'll
    cost a fortune.
    Cheers.

Ah, now there are lots of these. And you're right, they're not exactly
cheap - unless you used a DVD recorder, perhaps? [1] But if someone
wanted IS then they'd probably use a cam fitted with IS and take a feed
from the cam to the deck via firewire, S-video out etc.

If there's lots of vibration then I wouldn't want one of my cams used
because I doubt the internals would survive for very long, but if you
can find a cheap secondhand one that will output 'live' [2] rather than
from the tape then that could be a possible solution.

I think a pen lens is probably still the best solution, though.

[1] Although the quality isn't brilliant, certainly no where near as
    good as miniDV tape.

[2] I'd guess you're more likely to find a cheap cam that'll do a live
firewire feed rather than S-video feed. You'd need oodles of hard drive
space, but you could send to a PC and record that way.
