If I wanted to buy a number (say 6) branded laptops with Windows,
Office 03/07 and warranties where would be a good place to start
looking. Budget is about £1k each all in.

Ideal spec is smallish notebook form, 2Ghz processor, 1GB memory, 80GB
HDD, DVDRW, wireless. Which manufacturers to avoid?

    Dell, Toshiba.

Is this for cack-handed railway employees? If so, I'd suggest
something semi-rugged like Lenovos. If you want something pretty,
    Samsung.

"to avoid" being the bit of Sweller's email I was replying to, so
we're in agreement mostly - I old Toshiba Tecra self-destructed, and
my Dell (3100???) *literally* burst into flames as in, fire coming out
    of the screen.

  4. LOL, have you seen the latest Lenovo "Thinkpads"? There's been a
significant quality reduction, my T60 *bends*

Call Dell, they should take about 10% off if you're buying 6 with
warranty and software. Having said that, if you're sufficiently
organised, buy the extended warranty towards the end of the current
warranty and you effectively get an extra year as the extended
warranty runs from the date of warranty purchase.

that's a pity - my current X60 and the T42 before it are very solid.
We have some T60s in stock - I'll have to go and have a look.

I didn't mix them - even I wouldn't do that. No, seperate glasses were
    used throughout.

  11. I've had good results from the HP laptops I've bought here recently
(apart from the truely crap HP utilities pre-installed on them).

Avoid PC World and their competitors - they sell overpriced,
underspecced tat to credulous mugs who don't know any better.

Whatever you do, avoid these new shiny screens. They're great if you
want to look at your face/what's behind you but unless you're in a
darkened room they're pretty useless IME. See [1] for a comparison
between the shiny and non-shiny ones.

Ok, it doesn't rock. It does make people pull the most extraordinary
